Wildlife and Pet-friendly Garden Solutions

Peter Bowden will be sharing information on how to have the best garden while using only organic and no-chemical products. Join us on Saturday, March 24 from 11 a.m. to noon as Peter talks about new developments and products introduced in the last few years that make it possible to have a wildlife and pet friendly garden, something we all want. Tween Creativity Lab

Come learn the ins and outs of basic printmaking with local children’s artist and teacher, Aly Parrott on Saturday, March 24, from 2 to 4 p.m.. In this workshop we will explore the endless possibilities of the printmaking medium. We will learn the basics of sketching, transferring and carving designs, mixing ink and pulling prints onto our very own sketchbooks, t-shirts and wall-art. Students will be able to bring home their projects, as well as their carved designs to use over and over again. No need to worry; we will be using non-toxic water-soluble ink and easy, safe carving methods so students can concentrate on having fun and being creative! All supplies provided. Quilling – Tulip Card

Quilling, or paper filigree, is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The paper is wound around a quilling tool to create a basic coil shape. The paper is then glued at the tip and these shaped coils are arranged to form flowers, leaves, and various ornamental patterns. Register now for this Sunday, March 25 program that will run from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Introduction to Tea

Where does tea really come from? How is it made? What is the difference between green or black or white or orange pekoe or Darjeeling? There is so much to learn about the world’s most historic and widespread drink. Can we learn about it in 2 hours?  No, but we can begin while tasting some delicious teas of the world. Social Security Retirement Strategy

“Planning Your Social Security Retirement Income Strategy” is an approximately one-hour information program that’s presented in an easy to understand format and concludes with a brief Q&A session. The program goal is designed to help attendees (ages 55+) make a more informed decision before choosing when to claim their Social Security benefits. The Enterprise — Michael Koff

A thank you for a thank you: A flag from the 379th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron sits on the check-out counter of the Voorheesville Public Library. The flag was flown on Dec. 8, 2017, during a combat aeromedical evacuation mission, which transported six American service members some 1150 miles from Afghanistan to Qatar in the Persian Gulf. The flag is a thank-you for care packages of donated goods that were sent from the library to local troops during their deployment. The last line of the citation reads, “In honor of your good deeds, this flag is proudly presented to the Voorheesville Public Library.”

Teens Care

On Friday, March 9, from noon to 2:30 p.m., teens in grade seven and up can spend your afternoon off making some easy projects to comfort and amuse shelter animals. We’ll order pizza, or you can bring your own lunch. Participants will earn two hours of community service time. Space is very limited, so please register early.

AARP Defensive Driving

There is a $20 fee for AARP members (card must be shown) and $25 for non-members for this 6 hour defensive driving course. Payment is due at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 3, when class begins. Everyone must bring their driver license.

There will be a 30-minute bring-your-own lunch break. Snow date is March 10. Please register early.

Beading workshop

Every month the library holds a beading workshop, where you can learn easy beading techniques for making simple jewelry, fix a favorite piece, or use some of your old pieces to make a new piece.

This month, we will meet on Thursday, March 8, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. There is a small materials fee depending on which project you choose. Stop by anytime during the workshop that fits your schedule.

Barbara Lukas from WMHT will offer a fun and educational family literacy program for children ages 4 to 8 and their families on Saturday, Feb. 24. The group will read and discuss “The Day Jimmy’s Boa Ate the Wash” by Trinka Hakes Noble.

Each child will make a snake and get a copy of the book to take home. The program will run from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Magic of the Slow Cooker

Did you know your slow cooker can be used to make bread?

Join us at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28, as we learn about the benefits of slow-cooking, safe usage, selection, and cleaning. We will share and sample recipes and learn how to adjust recipes for use in a slow cooker.

Family Story Time and Yoga

Book talk

If you are interested in joining a book discussion group, the library has many choices available. Our fiction book discussion meets the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m.. The next meeting is Feb. 7 and the book is “Room” by Emma Donoghue. The same fiction title will be discussed at our afternoon book group, Books and Beyond, the third Wednesday of each month at 11 a.m.

Our Non-fiction book discussion meets the second Monday of every other month at 7 p.m. The next meeting is March 12, and the book is “Isaac’s Storm” by Erik Larson. We also host several teen, tween and children’s book groups.

Museum-pass program

When you are looking for something to do over the winter break or just to fill a weekend day, please remember the Library Museum Pass Program. We have free passes for a variety of museums, most within a one-hour drive of Voorheesville.

The majority of our passes will cover the cost of two adults and two children. Be sure to check with the museum for specific hours and days of operation.

First Lego Expo

On Monday, Jan. 15, from 1 to 3 p.m., you are invited to an Expo of the Voorheesville teams’ entries in this season’s First Lego League building challenges. The FLL Junior teams will take you on an Aqua Adventure, using bricks and motorized elements to show the wonders of water.

The FLL team will show off its Hydro Dynamics display. Ask the builders questions and check out the movements of their Lego programming.

As the judges confer, our free-build time will start. At 1:45 p.m. everyone is invited to take the library’s challenge to build a boat that floats — we’ll test it out in our water table! Enjoy other activities too.  No registration needed.

Adult Coloring-Book Club
