The Voorheesville Public Library is holding a coding club, after school on Mondays in November. The next class will be held on Nov. 26, from 3 to 4 p.m. Participants will learn about computational thinking and computer programming fundamentals. Class size is very limited, so please register for each class.
Beading workshop
Create some beaded holiday gifts at this month's workshop. Learn easy beading techniques for making simple bookmarks, ornaments, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. The Library provides tools and offers a variety of beads to choose from, or you are welcome to bring your own supplies and projects along. You may arrive at any time between 6 and 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, and there will be a small materials fee, depending on which project(s) you choose. Adults and teens ages 14 and up, please register.
Winter Boutique donations needed
The Friends of the Library are looking for gently-used, attractive jewelry, purses, wallets, scarves, frames, ornaments, decorative serving dishes, winter-themed linens, coasters and other winter-themed items to be sold at their second annual Winter Boutique.
The Winter Boutique will be held in the Library community room from 10:00 to 4:00 on Saturday, Dec. 1 and from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2. A bake sale will also held on Saturday, Dec. 1 in the library. Please drop off your donations during regular library hours on Monday through Friday, Nov. 26 through 30.
Decoupage workshop
Looking for something special to make for the holidays? Look no further than Saturday, December 8, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Using an assortment of pretty papers, we will make a unique holiday card with a removable star ornament.
Please specify when you register if you prefer a Christmas or Hanukkah motif. Local artist, Lydia Lynch, will facilitate the class. All materials will be supplied. Ages 8 through adult. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Second Sunday Film
Join us on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. for my favorite holiday action adventure film.
You know I can’t tell you the title here, but, if I say barefoot New York Police Officer John McClane spends the night trying to rescue his wife, Holly Gennaro, from bad guy Hans Gruber at a Christmas party at Nakatomi Plaza, I’m sure you will know what film I speak of.
The film is rated R, and runs for two hours and 12 minutes. Light refreshments will be served. No registration is needed.
Annual bus trip to New York city
Leaving from Voorheesville Elementary School parking lot at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15. Approximate arrival in New York City, near Bryant Park, is 10 a.m. Departure from NYC is 7 p.m. with approximate arrival in Voorheesville at 10 p.m.
The cost $55, and members of the Friends of the Library pay $50. Cash or check payment is due when you reserve your seat in person at the library.

This food demo and tasting by Nava Atlas will show you how to enjoy a healthier holiday season. Delicious food can be enjoyed guilt-free by using wholesome ingredients. On Sunday, Nov. 18, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., we’ll talk about how to create holiday fare that’s not only tasty, but easy!
The author of “Vegan Holiday Kitchen” who will demonstrate a festive kale salad, a gorgeous dish of black rice, corn, and cranberries that’s perfect for potlucks, and dairy-free smoky cheddar “cheez,” an irresistible appetizer. Nava will also talk about stress-free planning for holiday gatherings, time-saving tips, dishes for sharing, and dealing with dietary restrictions (your own or your guests).
Coding Club

Get started researching your family history and genealogy. Join us on Monday, Nov. 12, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for a hands-on class using Ancestry Library Edition, available at the library.
We will go over the interface, explore searching, and take away some helpful tips and tricks. Participants may use their own devices, or use one of the library’s laptops.

Then we will start personalizing our own designs using Tinkercad, a simple-to-use 3D design tool. The Library will print your design, and you will be able to take it home to keep or gift as you like. Open to everyone 14 years of age and older, no experience necessary.

Join us from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6, as we explore the fascinating history of destroyer escorts and the lives of three men who served in the United States Navy during World War II and are tied in some way to these trim but deadly warships.
The first is Frank Slater, killed in action at Guadalcanal and for whom the USS Slater is named. The second, Leonard Roy Harmon, also lost his life and would receive the posthumous distinction of being the first African American to have a ship named in his honor.
Finally, the remarkable story of a destroyer escort, the USS Samuel B. Roberts will be examined, highlighting the actions of Paul Henry Carr.
Healthy You, Healthy Earth
Join us at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, as we discuss the science of climate change, as well as the impact of this on our physical and mental well-being.
Interspersed with erratic weather patterns, raging forest fires, stultifying drought, violent hurricanes, melting glaciers and flooding, acidifying oceans, we witness the plight of environmental refugees fleeing unspeakable upheaval.

After 30 years of service to the Voorheesville Public Library, Director Gail Sacco is set to retire. A philosophy group meets every Thursday at the Voorheesville Public Library, including Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. It’s an informal and non-academic group that ordinarily discusses possible topics in between meetings on email.

Poor Humpty Dumpty! He has fallen off the wall and his egg has cracked. Can all the king’s horses and all the king’s men put Humpty Dumpty back together again?
Join Miss Amy and Mrs. Brown at 10:30 am on Saturday, Sept. 29, for an egg-cellent morning of Humpty Dumpty stories and Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math activities that will include an egg drop experiment, rolling egg painting, building a safe and sturdy wall, torn paper art, and playdough egg characters. This is for kids ages 3 to 7 with a caregiver. Please register.
Community Party
After 30 years of service to the Voorheesville Public Library, Director Gail Sacco is set to retire.
Please join us in a community send-off at the Steve Wallace Swift Road Town Park on Sunday, Sept. 30, from 1 to 6 p.m. This will be a potluck luncheon with music, and games for the kid.

Learn about CSS
This class will introduce Cascading Style Sheets, a companion language to HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) that is used to style (think color, fonts, layout) the web.
On Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 1 to 3 p.m., we will cover the basics and then participants will create their own webpage. No experience with CSS necessary, though participants should be familiar with HTML. Participants may bring their own devices, or use one of the Library’s laptops. This is for people age 13 and older. Please register.
Library Expedition
Visit as many of the 36 UHLS libraries as you can during the months of September through November. Enjoy the self-guided road trip after picking up the map/passport at the Voorheesville Public Library. You’ll earn prizes when you’ve visited 5, 15, 25, and 36 locations.
Finding the right college
Join us as we welcome Dean P. Skarlis, president of the College Advisor of New York, at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3. Dr. Skarlis will discuss college admissions and financial strategy for parents of high school sophomores and juniors.
Flu Shot Clinic
Pharmacists from the Voorheesville Hannaford Pharmacy will be administering flu immunizations on Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 1 to 3 p.m. Please stop in or call the Library Information Desk at 518-765-2791 to schedule a specific time slot.
Walk-ins are also welcome. Flu Shots are free with most insurance plans. If you are unsure of your policy requirements, the Voorheesville Hannaford can pre-check your insurance at the store at your convenience.
