Treats for Troops
Donate your excess Halloween candy to Soldiers’ Angels "Treats for Troops" program. Soldiers' Angels will get this candy to our Troops and Veterans for a sweet treat.
Throughout the month of November, the Voorheesville Public Library will be a collection site, so drop off any leftover Halloween candy or candy donations and we will box it up and ship it to Soldiers’ Angels.
Collecting for military care packages
Throughout the month of November, the Voorheesville Public Library will be collecting items specifically requested by military members who have recently been deployed around the globe.
These items will be packaged and sent to our troops just in time for the holidays. For a list of items being requested, please stop by the Voorheesville Public Library or check online at www.voorheesvillelibrary.org.
Teens care for veterans
Out-of-town veterans, and their families, stay at the Fisher House in Albany while receiving treatment at the Stratton Veterans Affairs Medical Center. On Friday, November 3, teens can spend their afternoon off making and packaging sweet treats for these Veterans.
Participants will earn 2 hours of community service credit. Pizza and beverages will be served, or you may bring your own lunch. For grades six and up, please register.
Vegan cooking
Bake it, scramble it, or eat it right out of the package. From 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 7, local vegan cook Nicole Arciello, will show you how versatile and easy tofu preparation can be.
Veteran’s Day Weekend Film Series
Join us on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. for “Hacksaw Ridge” and then again on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. for “Courage Under Fire”. Films are shown on our new theater system. Popcorn and light refreshments will be served.
Cloud storage basics
In this class we will demystify the cloud and look at its advantages and disadvantages. We will spend time managing files in the cloud and accessing them over the internet.
Participants can bring their own devices, or use one of the library’s laptops. Space is very limited, so please register for one session only: Monday, Nov. 13, from 10:30 a.m. to noon or Wednesday, Nov. 15, 6 to 7 p.m.

The Voorheesville Public Library now offers two movie days. You can join us at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoons for a classic movie, with greats like Bogart, Hepburn or Tracey.
And, you can join us at 2 p.m. on the second Sunday of the month for an award winning recent release. All movies include light refreshments and are shown on our new theater system. Check our events calendar for movie titles and ratings. No registration is needed.
Teen Time
Take the bus to the library after school on Friday, Oct. 6, to unwind, play games, or create something. Use SimCity, Scratch, the Leap Motion, 3D scanner, or 3D printer with our laptops. Teach yourself Tinkercad or Sculptris, invent something with the littleBits electronics kits, or program the Ozobots. We have Sticker Circuits, paper, fabric and craft supplies available if you want to get creative. Open from 3 to 5 p.m. to students in grade six and up, please register.
Lego Building
We’ve got bricks for all ages and stages, toddlers to tweens, everyone is welcome to drop in and enjoy building together on Monday, Oct.9 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. No registration is necessary.

Teen Read Week
Author Cherie Priest will be visiting us on Wednesday, Oct. 11, via Skype to celebrate Teen Read Week. Copies of “I Am Princess X” are available, keep Reading It Forward. This special after-school program will be held at the C.A. Mediterranean cooking

Register now to join the Voorheesville Seed Library volunteers on Monday, Oct. 16 to discuss planting fall crops and find out how to maximize this often forgotten growing season. You are invited to join the nonfiction book discussion group at the Voorheesville Public Library on Tuesday, Sept. 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. to discuss “The Wright Brothers’ by David McCullough.
He draws on the extensive Wright family papers to profile not only the brothers but their sister, Katharine, without whom things might well have gone differently for them.

In observance of the Labor Day holiday, the Voorheesville library will be closed on Saturday, Sept. 2 through Monday, Sept. 4. Regular hours will resume when the Library opens at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Seed Library
Now that our gardening season is coming to an end, it is the perfect time to think about replenishing the Voorheesville Seed Library for next year. Bring a yummy dish to share for our Harvest Potluck at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 6 and join the talk on seed saving techniques.

With some basic sewing skills and a little science knowledge, you can create a tiny teddy bear with a heart that really lights up. On Tuesday, June 27 at 7 p.m. students in grades seven and up can learn the basics of sewing with conductive thread and LEDs to complete a circuit.
Kids’ Movie Matinee
Looking for any way to get away from the life and town he was born into, Tripp, a high school senior, builds a Monster Truck from bits and pieces of scrapped cars. After an accident at a nearby oil-drilling site displaces a strange and subterranean creature with a taste and a talent for speed, Tripp may have just found the key to getting out of town and a most unlikely friend. The movie will start at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28 and is rated PG. The movie will run 104 minutes.. Light refreshments will be served.
Build a Better World
The plans have been constructed for a great summer of reading and exploring at the Voorheesville Public Library. All ages from babies to teens will find something to help build their enthusiasm for reading and learning.
Readers and young listeners can sign up to keep track of their summer reading progress through our website. With our reader reward system, all participants who record their reading by Friday, Aug. 25 will receive prizes at the end of the program and earn tickets for grand prize drawings, too.
This summer, your reading will help build a better elementary school community playground. For every book that participants read and record, the library will contribute five cents to the Friends of the Playground.

The library now has a bike fix-it station, located on the lower lawn off Prospect Street. The station includes all the tools necessary to perform basic bike repairs and maintenance, from changing a flat to adjusting brakes and derailleurs. The bike can be hung from the hanger arms on the fix-it, allowing the pedals and wheels to spin freely while making adjustments. The fix-it station is available for public use 24/7.
Story time fairy tales
Following a short storytime at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 13, parents and children aged 2 to 5 will explore and play at different stations using hands on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math, building not only their reading skills, but also their STEAM skills, too. Stations include: build a bridge for the “Three Billy Goats Gruff,” plant a beanstalk for Jack, “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” art, “Princess and the Pea” counting mat, and “Can the Big Bad Wolf blow it down?” experiment.
Messy and clean story time

Race and the Constitution
The last session in our Race and the Constitution series, where we will look at racism in the United States as a series of legal problems, will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 1.
We will discuss the key rights established by court rulings as well as legislation, and examine those rights in operation. Issues will be addressed in their historical context, and the workings of the legal system will be explored. The focus will be practical realities rather than theory.
The program will be led by Stephan Haimowitz (JD, Rutgers University, 1975) who has worked on a broad range of civil rights matters, and invited guests include an Albany County Judge and Albany Law School student. All are welcome – there are no required readings, though articles, books, and films will be suggested.
Medicare 101
If you are enrolled in Medicare or soon to be enrolled, you may have some questions. Janey Kiffney, a certified Medicare Counselor with the New York State Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program, will present a program explaining Medicare on Wednesday, May 3 at 10 a.m.

Woodland animal stories
Woodland animals are very active during the spring. Barbara Lukas from WMHT will offer a fun and educational program for children ages 2 to grade two, and families, about three special woodland animals.
Enjoy stories of local woodland animals and get creative by making puppets of all three of the featured woodland animal: raccoons, muskrat, and deer. Each child will receive a copy of Morning, Noon and Night by Jean Craigshead George. This Saturday program will begin at 10:15 a.m. on May 6.

The next library board of trustee meeting will be held at the library on May 15.
Join Dannah Pettit, a representative for New York’s 529 College Savings Program Direct Plan, tonight Thursday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Voorheesville Public Library. Ms. Pettit will give an overview on this college savings plan, with a question and answer period to follow.
Cooking with eggs
Students in grades four through eight are invited to join us on Friday, April 21 at 1:30 p.m. to learn how to make an egg burrito. Once you know how to prepare this single dish, you will never go hungry at breakfast, lunch, or dinner. After scrambling your eggs, you’ll add your favorite ingredients, roll them up and enjoy.

The Voorheesville Public Library is excited to host an egg incubator where we will watch real chicks hatch. Educator, naturalist, and chicken expert, George Steele, returns to candle our incubating eggs on Saturday, April 8, at 10:30 a.m., exactly nine days after setting them in the incubator.
What has happened inside the egg? How have the chicks developed? What fascinating things can we see inside the egg? Join us for an educational morning as we await the arrival of the chicks during Spring break. All ages welcome!
“Into Great Silence”
Join Dennis Sullivan and the Voorheesville Public Library for a viewing of this important documentary, a work of art depicting the everyday life of the Carthusian Order of monks. Due to the length of the film, the viewing will start promptly at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12.
