Calling all bakers! The library’s annual Book & Bake Sale will be held on Saturday, May 13 — the day before Mother’s Day — from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the library.  Donations of baked goods are welcomed.  A sign-up sheet is at the circulation desk.

Everyone else — mark your calendars!  This is your chance to treat Mom to something sweet on her special day!  There will also be a selection of books, music and videos for sale.

We couldn’t do it without the support of our community.  Thanks to our friends and patrons who support our book and bake sales and allow us to “keep the change” when paying for fines or photocopies.  Every penny makes a difference!

After school

Join Miss Lee on Monday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for homework help, games, crafts, puzzles, music, and a lot more.

Programs will also include storytelling, hands-on demonstrations, and visits from special guests. Lee is also available on Thursdays from 3 to 8 p.m. for homework help.

STEAM Arts and Crafts

New! Wednesday mornings, from 10 to 11 a.m., Miss Lee will present a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math program aimed at a variety of age groups.

Each week will feature a different STEAM-based activity with hands-on crafts and demonstrations.

Story time

New! Due to popular demand, story time is moving to Fridays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.  One Friday per month, Miss Lee will present stories, songs, and movement activities designed for infants to children up to 5 years old.

In addition to developing pre-reading skills, singing, moving to music, and playing instruments all help foster a sense of rhythm and timing that are essential elements in developing the part of a child’s brain that shapes math skills.

Story times are also a great opportunity to meet other parents of small children in Westerlo.

Technology Walk-In Wednesdays

Do you have a new smartphone or tablet, but don’t know how to download digital materials? Need to brush up on your computer skills — or obtain basic skills?

See Amy on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. for free, personalized, one-on-one instruction.

The Westerlo Public Library is proud to announce a $500 grant from the Stewart’s Holiday Match Program. This grant will be used to purchase a Nintendo Wii gaming system – focusing on Wii interactive sports games.

We look forward to using the system in our new 600 square-foot program and community room currently under construction. This new space will be the ideal venue to facilitate social interaction and promote physical activity and fitness for children and families.

It is through the support of individuals and local charitable organizations, like Stewart’s Foundation and their very generous customers, that we are able to strengthen our existing programs, and develop new and innovative library projects to serve our patrons and the community at large.

Over the past 30 years, Stewart’s Foundation and its Holiday Match customers have awarded over $24 million to thousands of community organizations that serve children’s recreation and education.  Thank you, Stewart’s!

Read to Lefty the Dog

Lefty will be back this Friday, March 17, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Contact the library to register your child for a 15-minute reading session, or just drop in to “Check it out!” (Librarians love saying, “Check it out.”)

Lefty is a registered therapy dog. Our thanks to Eric Markson for volunteering his time and sharing Lefty with us.

We are under construction! The Westerlo Library is proud to announce that work has begun on our latest Public Library Construction Grant-funded project.

This project will create a 650-square-foot multi-purpose program and community room within the library building in the space formerly occupied by the town museum. The project will also renovate the existing bathroom, add a new kitchenette, and create a quiet reading area in the existing library space.  A new heating and air-conditioning system capable of conditioning the entire building, including the new community room, will also be installed. Contractors are Red Sun Builders of Westerlo, Morsellino Brothers Mechanical of New Baltimore and Unlimited Concrete of Westerlo.

This project has been made possible thanks to many generous gifts — large and small — with 75 percent of the estimated $100,000 cost of construction matched by a $75,000 grant from the New York State Department of Education.

Memoir writing

The Memoir Writing Group will meet on Saturday, March 11, at 11 a.m. This group provides its members a safe place to learn together with people that are accepting and supportive. The group is about creating, not criticism. It is about the practice of remembering and writing.  It is not about publishing, polishing, or picking out the problems.

Led by Lila Hollister Smith, this group is open to all who are interested in self-expression through the art of writing. The group meets once a month on the second Saturday of each month and new members are welcomed.

Read to Lefty

Please join us in welcoming Lefty to the library family. Lefty will be at the library next Friday, Jan. 13, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

If your child is self-conscious about reading aloud or reluctant to read at all, he or she may feel more comfortable reading to a dog. Because dogs aren’t judgmental, the child relaxes, pats the attentive dog, and focuses on the reading. Another benefit is the joy children get from simply being around a dog.

Lefty is a registered therapy dog. Our thanks to Eric Markson for volunteering his time and sharing Lefty with us.

New: Flipster!

Beginning in January digital magazines will no longer be available through OverDrive. We are offering a new service, Flipster! through the Upper Hudson Library System. It’s easy. All you need is your library card to access over 60 of your favorite magazine titles. Click on the link on our website or at uhls.org to download magazines to your phone, tablet or computer.
