Westerlo Library Notes for Friday, March 17, 2017

The Westerlo Public Library is proud to announce a $500 grant from the Stewart’s Holiday Match Program. This grant will be used to purchase a Nintendo Wii gaming system – focusing on Wii interactive sports games.

We look forward to using the system in our new 600 square-foot program and community room currently under construction. This new space will be the ideal venue to facilitate social interaction and promote physical activity and fitness for children and families.

It is through the support of individuals and local charitable organizations, like Stewart’s Foundation and their very generous customers, that we are able to strengthen our existing programs, and develop new and innovative library projects to serve our patrons and the community at large.

Over the past 30 years, Stewart’s Foundation and its Holiday Match customers have awarded over $24 million to thousands of community organizations that serve children’s recreation and education.  Thank you, Stewart’s!

Read to Lefty the Dog

Lefty will be back this Friday, March 17, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Contact the library to register your child for a 15-minute reading session, or just drop in to “Check it out!” (Librarians love saying, “Check it out.”)

Lefty is a registered therapy dog. Our thanks to Eric Markson for volunteering his time and sharing Lefty with us.

Quilting and fiber arts group

Our next meeting is Saturday, March 25, at 11 a.m. at the library. We are expanding to include anyone who likes to work with fabric, threads, or yarns. Please join us and get acquainted with others who share your passion. We will trade tips and techniques as well as show off our projects to each other. There will be monthly themes, lessons, demonstrations and challenges.

The theme for March is linen — fiber, fabric, household linens. See a collection of old transfer designs for embroidery on linens and new ways to repurpose old linens into quilts and other objects. For “show and share,” bring something made from linen and any questions you have.

Led by Lila Hollister Smith, this group is open to all crafters who use fibers and textiles at all skill levels.  The group meets once a month on the fourth Saturday of each month and new members  and casual visitors are always welcomed.

After school

Join Miss Lee on Monday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for homework help, games, crafts, puzzles, music, and a lot more. Programs will also include storytelling, hands-on demonstrations, and visits from special guests. Lee is also available on Thursdays from 3 to 8 p.m. for homework help.

Story time

From 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesday mornings Miss Lee presents stories, songs, and movement activities designed for infants to children up to 5 years old. In addition to developing pre-reading skills, singing, moving to music, and playing instruments all help foster a sense of rhythm and timing that are essential elements in developing the part of a child’s brain that shapes math skills.

Storytimes are also a great opportunity to meet other parents of small children in Westerlo.

Technology Walk-In Wednesdays

Do you have a new Kindle or Nook, but don’t know how to download books? Need to brush up on your computer skills – or obtain basic skills?  See Amy on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. for free, personalized, one-on-one instruction.
