Calling all bakers! The Westerlo Public Library’s annual book and bake sale will be held on Saturday, May 7, the day before Mother’s Day, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the library. Donations of baked goods are welcomed. A sign-up sheet is at the circulation desk.
Everyone else mark your calendars. This is your chance to treat Mom to something sweet on her special day. There will also be a selection of books, music, and videos for sale.
We couldn’t do it without the support of our community. Thanks to our friends and patrons who support our book and bake sales and allow us to “keep the change” when paying for fines or photocopies. Every penny makes a difference.
Quilting group
The quilting Group will meet this Saturday, April 23, at 11 a.m., at the library. Members show and share techniques, gadgets, projects, and ideas . You may get help with problems or inspiration. Led by Lila Hollister Smith, the group is open to all crafters who use fibers and textiles at all skill levels. The group meets the second and fourth Saturday of each month and new members are welcomed.

The Westerlo Public Library book discussion group will meet on Thursday, March 17, at 7 p.m., at the library. For the month of March, we will choose our own adventure with a Western theme. Our inspiration is Russell Martin’s lushly illustrated book, “Cowboy: The Enduring Myth of the Wild West.” Like the book, we will explore American Western culture from John Wayne’s depiction of the “wild west” to John Travolta’s contemporary portrait in Urban Cowboy. Please join us. New members are welcome.
Makerspace workshop
On Friday, March 18, at 6 PM, the library will host a public workshop exploring the Maker Movement, sustainable farming and local economic development in the Hilltowns. Led by April Roggio, a local independent researcher, these community dialogs hope to answer the following question: Would the development of a makerspace in the Hilltowns help nurture small farmers?
Funded with a grant from the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (NESARE), Sustainable Hilltowns is interested, broadly, in pursuing activities that encourage sustainable economic development, food security and prosperity in our region.

Display case
For the month of March the library is displaying a collection of Kodak Brownie Cameras. With the slogan "you press the button, we do the rest," George Eastman put the first simple camera into the hands of a world of consumers in 1888. In so doing, he made a cumbersome and complicated process easy to use and accessible to nearly everyone.
In 1900, the Kodak Brownie camera brought photography within financial reach of consumers. The camera sold for $1 and film was 15 cents a roll. The Brownie is one of the most iconic cameras in history. Tens of millions were made so they are easy to find and buy even today, and most do not have high value as collectables.

The Westerlo Board of Library Trustees will meet on Monday, March 14, at 7 p.m. at the library. This is an open public meeting.
Read to Angus the Dog
Angus will be back this Friday, March 11, from 5 to 6 p.m. (new time). Contact the library to register your child for a 15-minute reading session, or just drop in to “Check it out!” (Librarians love saying, “check it out.”)
If your child is self-conscious about reading aloud or reluctant to read at all, he or she may feel more comfortable reading to a dog. Because dogs aren’t judgmental, the child relaxes, pats the attentive dog, and focuses on the reading Another benefit is the joy children get from being around a dog. The Westerlo Public Llibrary book discussion group meets tonight Thursday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m., at the library. We will discuss an assortment of entries from Graham Ison’s "Inspector Brock & Sergeant Poole" British police procedural mystery series.
Ison’s 30-year career in Scotland Yard’s Special Branch ensures realism in the police investigation methods, the interactions of the detectives, and the crimes themselves.
In addition to the Brock and Poole series, he has written the Hardcastle historical mystery series set during World War I, and scripted for Thames Television's “The Bill.”

For the month of February the library is displaying Nancy Latham’s vintage Black Americana Folk Art. Black memorabilia, sometimes called Black Americana, describes objects and ephemera relating to African American and Afro-European history. Dating from the mid-1800s through the mid-1900s, collectibles range from dolls, figurines, and advertising caricatures, to slave documents. Nancy’s collection includes tins, ceramic ware, dolls, and more.

Two new creative support groups are forming at the Westerlo Public Library and we’re looking for members.
The artists’ group will provide support to its members’ work and growth as artists — beginner or professional. It’s about encouraging creativity, not critique. It is not about competition, shows, or sales.
The memoir writing group will provide its members a safe place to learn together with people that are accepting and supportive. The group is about creating, not criticism.
It is about the practice of remembering and writing. It is not about publishing, polishing, or picking out the problems.
Lila Hollister Smith will lead both of these new groups. She is a founding member of the Capital District Textile Artists Group and leads the library's quilting group. She also teaches, gives trunk show talks, and exhibits in art galleries.
The library is a great place to meet like-minded individuals. If you are interested in joining any of these groups, please contact the library.

Display case
For the month of January the library is displaying Dennis Fancher’s collection of patent models and salesman’s samples.
A patent model is a scratch-built miniature working model, that showed how the item being patented worked. The models were required to accompany all patent applications from 1790 to 1880.
Salesman’s samples are similar to patent models, in that they are miniature-working models. But they were produced for traveling salesmen to demonstrate items too large or heavy to be easily transported to potential customers. They are usually covered with advertising and the manufacturer’s name.
