Summer Reading Program
Our 2016 summer reading program will begin on Wednesday, July 6 the theme “Ready, Set, READ!” We will explore sports, games, and activities that promote good health and fitness with books, science experiments, art projects, and other activities. The library’s quilting group will meet this Saturday, June 25, at 11 a.m. at the library. Members show and share techniques, gadgets, projects and ideas. You may get help with problems or inspiration. Bring any fabric or fiber (knit, crochet, weaving, etc.) project to show. We would love to see what you can do.
Led by Lila Hollister Smith, the group is open to all crafters who use fibers and textiles at all skill levels. The group meets once a month on the fourth Saturday of each month and new members are welcomed.

Just as in the spring the sparrows return to Capistrano and the buzzards return to Hinckley, Ohio, the frogs return to Lake Onderdonk and it’s — FROGDAMONIUM! Big frogs, little frogs, bull frogs, cow frogs — they all return to the lake.
But, for the month of June, the frogs are visiting the Westerlo Public Library. There are ceramic frogs, metal frogs, even an Elvis Frog. Check it out and learn everything you ever wanted to know about frogs — and have a smile at this fun collection. Thanks to Carrie and Bob Bogart for sharing.

We will discuss Sarah Addison Allen’s novel, “Garden Spells.” In a garden surrounded by a tall fence, tucked away behind a small, quiet house in the smallest of towns, is an apple tree that is rumored to bear a very special sort of fruit. In this debut novel, Sarah Addison Allen tells the story of that enchanted tree, and the extraordinary people who tend it.

Happy Birthday to us! On June 8, the Westerlo Public Library will mark its 30th anniversary of service to the town of Westerlo.
Our grand opening was held on Sunday, June 8, 1986. But, the journey began in earnest 10 years earlier when the town’s national bicentennial committee established a public library fund with monies left over from the bicentennial celebrations.
Then, the big breakthrough came in December 1983, when Harold Bell donated the general store building to the town in memory of his wife, Helen Taylor Bell.
For two-and-a-half years, a variety of community organizations and individual volunteers dedicated innumerable hours renovating the building, which had no plumbing or central heating. Local librarians volunteered to catalog the books, most which had been donated. More volunteers typed thousands of catalog cards (sometimes wearing gloves in the unheated building during the winter) to get the books shelf-ready for the public.
Since then, the library has moved forward into the electronic age with high speed internet access, Wi-Fi, an on-line catalog and account management, all while maintaining our friendly personalized service, relaxed atmosphere and providing an ample selection of new items on the shelves for our browsing patrons.
This library has been a community project from the beginning. We are committed to providing the highest level of library services to the people of Westerlo for many years to come.

Town-wide garage sale
The 11th annual town-wide garage sale will be held next Saturday, June 11. The town museum board sponsors this annual event to raise funds for our sister organization, the Westerlo Heritage Museum.
If you would like to hold a sale on your property or at the town pavilion, please mail your registration form and $15 fee by June 3. Your sale will be listed on a map and advertised in the capital district. Registration forms have been distributed to the library, the post office, and other sites throughout the area.
The museum will sell refreshments, baked goods, and maps to sale sites on the day of the sale at the Westerlo town park pavilion on County Route 401, starting at 8 a.m. Call Kate at 797-3295 for more information.

Display case
For the month of May the library is displaying Diane Figel’s collection of vintage kitchen utensils. All of the items on display are in good working order, and most are currently in use in Diane’s kitchen. Those of us “of a certain age” will have no difficulty recognizing the cast iron eggbeater, the galvanized steel flour sifters or the10 different kinds of can and bottle openers. (We probably have some of them in our own kitchens!)
Kitchen gadgets, even olive forks and those little doodads used to make melon balls, have a place in the heart of a collector. There’s also something special about taking a gadget out of the drawer to use it and remembering your grandmother, mom, or a favorite aunt, using the tool in her kitchen.
Hang on to them and continue to use them. Your favorite kitchen implements will likely be around for the next generation.

When you support our book and bake sale, and allow us to keep the change when paying fines or photocopies, it makes a real difference. Those “keep the change” nickels quickly add up into dollars that fund improvements like our beautiful stainless steel book return.

Treat Mom to something sweet on her special day. The Westerlo Public Library’s annual book and bake sale will be held this Saturday, May 7 — the day before Mother’s Day — from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the library. Bakers, donations of baked goods will be at the library accepted through Friday.
In addition to desserts and pastries of all kinds, there will be books, music, and videos for sale. If those don’t strike your fancy, we will have a special selection of handmade beeswax candles crafted exclusively for the library.
