The Westerlo Library will be closed on Saturday, Dec. 31 for New Year’s Eve and Monday, Jan. 2 in observance of the New Year’s Holiday.

Coupon exchange

Do you hate throwing away coupons, even when you can’t use them? Well, we’ve got the solution.  Donate your unused (unexpired!) coupons to the coupon exchange box and, in turn, help yourself to the coupons that others have donated.

Your public library is a good value in ways you never imagined.

New book bags

Speaking of a good value, our new book bags are also great reusable grocery totes. Only $5 each, all proceeds benefit the library. And, every time you use them you’ll be raising awareness of the Westerlo Public Library.

After school

Join Miss Lee on Monday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for homework help, games, crafts, puzzles, music and a lot more!  Programs will also include storytelling, hands-on demonstrations, and visits from special guests.  Lee is also available on Thursdays from 3 to 8 p.m. for homework help.

Story time

From 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesday mornings Miss Lee presents stories, songs, and movement activities designed for infants to children up to 5 years old.  In addition to developing pre-reading skills, singing, moving to music, and playing instruments all help foster a sense of rhythm and timing that are essential elements in developing the part of a child’s brain that shapes math skills.

Story times are also a great opportunity to meet other parents of small children in Westerlo.

The Board of Library Trustees will meet on Monday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. at the library. This is an open public meeting.

Book talk

The library book discussion group will meet next Thursday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m. at the library. Join us as we read to get into the spirit of the holidays. If you’re looking for adventure, a good book can take you there. We’re going to read for pure pleasure and share our favorites with the group.  New members are welcome.

Read to Lefty the Dog

Please join us in welcoming Lefty to the library family.  Lefty will be at the library next Friday, Dec. 16, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

If your child is self-conscious about reading aloud or reluctant to read at all, he or she may feel more comfortable reading to a dog. Because dogs aren’t judgmental, the child relaxes, pats the attentive dog, and focuses on the reading. Another benefit is the joy children get from simply being around a dog.

Lefty is a registered therapy dog. Our thanks to Eric Markson for volunteering his time and sharing Lefty with us.

It is not about publishing, polishing or picking out the problems.

Led by Lila Hollister Smith, this group is open to all who are interested in self-expression through the art of writing.  The group meets once a month on the second Saturday of each month and new members are welcomed.

Lila is a founding member of the Capital District Textile Artists group and leads the Westerlo Library Quilting Group.  She also teaches, gives trunk show talks and exhibits in art galleries.

The Westerlo library’s quilting group will meet Saturday, Dec. 3, at 11 a.m. at the library. Members show and share techniques, gadgets, projects, and ideas — you may get help with problems or inspiration.   Bring any fabric or fiber (knit, crochet, weaving, etc.) project to show. We would love to see what you can do.

This session will be devoted to learning how to use the sewing machine.

Led by Lila Hollister Smith, the group is open to all crafters who use fibers and textiles at all skill levels.  The group meets once a month (usually) on the fourth Saturday of each month and new members are welcomed.

Anniversary Quilt

Help us continue to celebrate the library’s 30th anniversary by sharing the title of your favorite book.

Sponsored by the Westerlo Quilting Group, the first quilted “book shelf” is in the display case. As the titles are added to the quilt, more “shelves” will be added. Eventually, they will all be pieced together to make one wall hanging to mark the library’s 30 years of service to the town of Westerlo.

Striped leggings and polka-dot socks disappear into a fire truck on Nov. 5 as Assistant Chief Andrew Joslin demonstrates Westerlo Volunteer Fire Company’s fire-fighting apparatus at an open house. The volunteers also presented a fire-prevention program at the Westerlo Library.

A big thank-you to Lisa Joslin and the Westerlo Volunteer Fire Company!

The company’s Nov. 5 fire prevention program at the library and open house at the fire station, was informative — a whole lot of fun! The children were thrilled to get a close-up look at the fire truck and climb inside.

And we were all impressed by the demonstrations of forcible entry and power extrication tools.

A big thank-you to the kind elf who slipped in unseen — but not unnoticed! — and repainted our historic marker. Over the past few weeks, this civic-minded individual has restored the markers all along Route 143. One day the sign was faded and worn, then — presto! — the next day it was sharp and legible in crisp dark blue and yellow.

The historic marker in front of the library — one of 20 markers placed in Westerlo by the New York State Department of Education’s Historic Marker program between 1926 and 1966 — reads:  “Grant & Eadie, Early Storekeepers, Made Potash at Chesterville, 1798.”  Some form of commerce was conducted on the site for nearly 200 years until the opening of the library in 1986.

Read to Angus the Dog

Angus will be back next Friday, Nov. 4, from 5 to 6 p.m.  Contact the library to register your child for a 15-minute reading session, or just drop in to “check it out!”  (Librarians love saying, “Check it out.”)
