Children’s Programs

Thank you to all who joined our Summer Reading Program, Dig Into Reading this year. We hope you had as much fun as we did.

Toddler and preschool story time meets on Wednesday at 10 a.m.  Join Miss Lee for stories, songs, games and movement activities designed for children ages two to five years old.  In addition to developing pre-reading skills, singing, moving to music, and playing instruments all help foster a sense of rhythm and timing that are essential elements in developing the part of a child’s brain that shapes math skills.

Technology Walk-In Wednesday

Do you need to brush up on your computer skills or obtain basic skills?  See Amy on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. for free, personalized, one-on-one, hands-on instruction on how to work the mouse, navigate the Internet, set up an email account, use office automation programs, and more.  If Wednesday mornings are not convenient, please contact us to schedule an appointment.

Instead of taking our usual summer hiatus, we’re going to keep on reading.  But, we’re going to lighten up and read for pure pleasure.  The Westerlo Public Library’s book discussion group for the month of August’s selection takes us down Tara Road with Maeve Binchy.  Two women, one in Dublin, Ireland, the other in Connecticut, exchange houses for the summer (there’s that summer theme again!) with extraordinary consequences.  At the end of the summer, they finally meet face-to-face and find that they have become, firmly and forever, good friends.  Please join us on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m.  New members are welcomed.

Libraries are cool! We already knew that, but you may not have known that Albany County public libraries are official cooling stations during heat advisories.  If you find you can’t stand the heat, beat a path to your local public library to enjoy the AC – or a book or a magazine.

The Westerlo Public Library presents a very special summer reading program for children and families. Join us Wednesday, July 31, at 7 p.m., at the Westerlo town hall auditorium for “Fascinating Gadgets:  Inventors & Inventions from Around the World” with Jeff Boyer.

Let Jeff Boyer be your guide, as you travel the world through gadgets and investigate inventors and their wacky, wild, and wonderful inventions!  Audience members join Jeff onstage in dazzling demonstrations of devices from around the globe.  Using math and science, we learn how a treasure trove of inventions work.  Fascinating gadgets created by scientists from Greece, Italy, Scotland, Switzerland, Holland, and, of course, the United States of America star in this show about ingenuity.  Come and see the show that really measures up!

This program was supported in part by funds from the New York State Library’s Family Literacy Library Services grant program and the Upper Hudson Library System.
