If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

        In Flanders fields.

                                    — John McCrae

The roots of Memorial Day come from the war that tore our nation asunder.

The Civil War touched the life of every American. It killed 650,000 to 850,000 soldiers outright as well as countless civilians.
