Voorheesville Library Notes for Thursday, November 8, 2018

If you get a chance, please be sure to stop by the Voorheesville Public Library to welcome our new director, Sarah Clark. Sarah comes to us from the Albany Public Library.She is thrilled to be working in her hometown library and would like to meet you.

While here, be sure to check out the display case, which is filled with items for the Friends of the Library Winter Boutique. Items will be for sale Dec. 1 and 2 in the community room, but check it out now in the display case.

Also on display this month is the USS Slater Museum paintings in our hallway gallery. There’s a lot to see this month at the library.

Second Sunday Film

This Veterans Day, Sunday, Nov. 11, stop by the library at 2 p.m. to watch as “Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire, and France are surrounded by the German Army, and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II,” as the Internet Movie Database describes it.

The 2017 film stars Fion Whitehead, Barry Keoghan, and Mark Ryland, is rated PG-13, and runs for one hour and 46 minutes. Light refreshments will be served. Check the library website or call for the movie’s title.

Research with Ancestry

Get started researching your family history and genealogy. Join us on Monday, Nov. 12, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for a hands-on class using Ancestry Library Edition, available at the library.

We will go over the interface, explore searching, and take away some helpful tips and tricks.  Participants may use their own devices, or use one of the library’s laptops.

Family Yoga Class

Join us at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 17, for a one-hour free family yoga class with Tricia from Kind Performing Arts! No yoga experience is necessary and the whole family is invited.

Bring a mat if you have one. The class is designed for participants ages 4 and up. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

Eat healthier for the holidays

This food demo and tasting by Nava Atlas will show you how to enjoy a healthier holiday season. Delicious food can be enjoyed guilt-free by using wholesome ingredients.

On Sunday, Nov. 18, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., we’ll talk about how to create holiday fare that’s not only tasty, but easy! The author of “Vegan Holiday Kitchen” will demonstrate a festive kale salad, a gorgeous dish of black rice, corn, and cranberries that’s perfect for potlucks, and dairy-free smoky cheddar “cheez,” an irresistible appetizer.

Nava will also talk about stress-free planning for holiday gatherings, time-saving tips, dishes for sharing, and dealing with dietary restrictions (your own or your guests). With Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, and the New Year around the corner, this program will give you plenty of tasty ideas that will make your holiday season happier and healthier.

Holiday hours

The library will close at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21, and will remain closed on Thursday, Nov, 22, in observance of Thanksgiving. Regular hours will resume at 9:30 a.m., on Friday, Nov. 23.
