Voorheesville Library Notes for Thursday, October 11, 2018

Stories about the USS Slater will be shared at the Voorheesville Public Library on Oct. 24. The destroyer escort was involved in World War II, served in the Greek Navy, and now serves as a museum docked in Albany.

The Voorheesville Public Library is hosting a Beading Workshop on Tuesday, Oct. 23. The library provides tools and offers a variety of beads to make simple necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.

Adults and teens ages 14 and up can join us any time from 6 to 8 p.m. to learn easy beading techniques. Please register, and there is a small materials fee depending on project choice.

Second Sunday Film

Join us on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m. for the 1931 version of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein,” starring Boris Karloff. The movie, which is not rated, runs for 70 minutes. Popcorn and snacks will be served.

Saving Slater

Join Alan Fox at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24, for as he shares the story of USS Slater and why she was chosen to become the Destroyer Escort Historical Museum.

Stories will be shared about the history of destroyer escorts, Slater’s involvement in World War II; her service in the Greek Navy; and her restoration, transforming her into a world class museum. Presented by a Slater volunteer, this program will give patrons a first-hand look at the hard work that goes into keeping the “Old Girl” afloat.

Windows 10

Windows 10 is set to be the “last version of Windows,” so now is a great time to learn it. Please register for this overview of the new Microsoft operating system.

We will start at the sign-in screen, explore new features, and even take a quick look under the hood at the control panel. Participants can bring their own devices or use one of the Library’s laptops. Please register for either 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, or for 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17.

Upcycled​ Candle Holder

Adults, and teens in grade 6 and up, are invited to register for this Thursday, Oct. 18, program to learn how to upcycle old mason jars into votive candle holders using paper decoupage.

All supplies will be  provided; just bring your creativity! The program starts at 6:30 p.m.

DIY Frankenstein Operation Game

Students in grades 3 to 8, with a caregiver, are invited to register for this Sunday, Oct. 21, program. Use your own drawing or a photo to make an electronic monster operation game.

Using LEDs, wires, buzzers, and more, each family will create their own personalized game at the library, and then take it home. Supplies will be provided; no electronic experience is necessary.

Protecting native bees and native plants

From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, Peter Bowden will discuss all the new “Wildlife and Pet-Friendly Garden Solutions.” Many new organic and non-chemical products are now available to the home gardener, for better and safe gardening.

Philosophy 101

The Philosophy Group will meet the third Thursday of every month. People with opinions are welcome to follow where the conversation leads.

The group is always seeking talkers. It’s very casual and there’s no homework! Drop in or call for more information.
