Voorheesville Library Notes for Thursday, November 1, 2018

Parents or caregivers and young readers are invited to join us at the Voorheesville Public Library at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, as we discuss “Miguel and the Grand Harmony,” the charming picture book adaptation of the film “Coco.”

Enjoy festive Day of the Dead activities and snacks, too. This program is for children in grades kindergarten through second grade with a caregiver. Please stop by the library and pick up a copy of the book.

3D Printing: Personalized Gift Edition

Looking for a special gift for someone? Why not make them something using the Library’s Lulzbot Mini2 3D Printer? From 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 5, we will cover the basics of how the machine works.

Then we will start personalizing our own designs using Tinkercad, a simple-to-use 3D design tool. The Library will print your design, and you will be able to take it home to keep or gift as you like. Open to everyone 14 years of age and older, no experience necessary.

Heroes All Around Us

Join us from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6, as we explore the fascinating history of destroyer escorts and the lives of three men who served in the United States Navy during World War II and are tied in some way to these trim but deadly warships.

The first is Frank Slater, killed in action at Guadalcanal and for whom the USS Slater is named. The second, Leonard Roy Harmon, also lost his life and would receive the posthumous distinction of being the first African American to have a ship named in his honor.

Finally, the remarkable story of a destroyer escort, the USS Samuel B. Roberts will be examined, highlighting the actions of Paul Henry Carr.

Healthy You, Healthy Earth

Join us at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, as we discuss the science of climate change, as well as the impact of this on our physical and mental well-being.

Interspersed with erratic weather patterns, raging forest fires, stultifying drought, violent hurricanes, melting glaciers and flooding, acidifying oceans, we witness the plight of environmental refugees fleeing unspeakable upheaval.

Local author Maia Boswell-Penc, Ph.D. will present both facts and solutions. No is registration needed.

Holiday Paper Wreath

Make a lovely and unique wreath from decorative paper pieces and embellishments, finished with a ribbon bow. Instructor Lydia Lynch will be leading this Saturday, Nov. 10, program from 10:30 a.m. to noon. It is open to adults and teens.

Second Sunday Film

This Veterans Day, Sunday, Nov. 11, stop by the library at 2 p.m. to watch a film starring Fion Whitehead, Barry Keoghan, Mark Ryland. The Internet Movie Database describes the movie this way: “Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire and France are surrounded by the German Army, and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.”

The 2017 film is rated PG-13, and runs for one hour and 46 minutes. Light refreshments will be served.
