Three relay teams along with four individual swimmers and two divers from the Guilderville team — made up of girls from Guilderland and Voorheesville — competed at Ithaca College in Friday and Saturday at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association state championships.

The Voorheesville Blackbirds needed one more win to be one of the final four teams, playing for the state championship in Glens Falls next Saturday.

Three local runners, two from Voorheesville and one from Berne-Knox-Westerlo, slogged through the mud and snow at the State Cross-Country competition at Wayne High School in Ontario Center in western New York Saturday, racing against the fastest runners in New York. Each ran on the 3.1 mile course.

The Guilderland-Voorheesville girls’ swim team battled for a sectional title last Thursday through Saturday in hopes of qualifying for the state competition on Nov. 17 and 18 at Ithaca College. Guilderville is sending three relay teams along with numerous solo swimmers.

It was hot and humid at Union-Endicott High School in Endicott for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association outdoor track and field championships. Guilderland sent three individual competitors and one relay team last Friday and Saturday.

On Friday and Saturday, Guilderland and Berne-Knox-Westerlo state qualifiers battle to win a state title in their respective events at Cicerco-North Syracuse High School in Cicero.

Track-and-field events sometimes come down to physics and psyche, pushing by increments.

Without a coach, Shayla Lyons has perfected her shot put technique watching YouTube videos; her school has no track facilities, so she practices in a parking lot — the challenges have made her a champ.

The high sun and heavy humidity didn't stop Guilderland athletes from placing near the top during state championships for outdoor track and field.

Three Guilderland track-and-field athletes will compete in three separate events Friday and Saturday in the Division 1 state championships, along with a 4 x 800 relay team.
