Photos: Competing with New York's Best

Guilderland and Guilderville athletes took to the bright lights and the big stage of state competition this past weekend in gymnastics, swimming, and track.

Quick work: Guilderland's Nick Soldevere, pictured qualifying for state competition during sectionals, ran in the 1000-meter race on Staten Island, finishing fourth in the state with a time 2:33.33.

Guilderville swimmers Joey Gravino and Benjamin Brkanovic competed at the Nassau County Aquatic Center on Long Island, each finishing in the top 20 statewide. On Friday, Gravino springs from the starting board in the 100-meter freestyle where he finished fifth with a time of 48.09 and then competed in the “B” final, finishing 18th in the state with a time of 48.36. Gravino also finished 16th in the state in the 50-meter freestyle.

Throwing water: Guilderville Benjamin Brkanovic took to the pool for the 200-meter individual medley, finishing fifth with a time of 2:01.49 and then finishing 38th in the state. In the 100-meter backstroke, he finished ninth in the state with a time of 53.62.

Happy competitor: Guilderland's Allison Rem, pictured in sectional competition. She competed in three gymnastics events at the state competition at Cold Springs Harbor High School in Suffolk County on Long Island, finishing 32nd on the uneven bars, 18th on the beam, and 17th on the floor.

Good balance: Guilderland teammate Rachel Drislane, pictured at sectional competition, qualified for all four events on Saturday. Drislane finished 33rd on vault, 37th on uneven bars, 14th on the beam, and 17th on the floor.
