Hilltowns

I am writing this column after going through a very sad weekend. As most of you know, I lost my only son, Danny, to a very tragic accident on Saturday.

To the Editor:

The Knox Fire Company has held a memorial service each year since the 9-11 tragedy in 2001.  This year’s service will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 7 pm, behind the Knox firehouse in the hamlet of Knox.

I always enjoy time with my family and today I am reminiscing about the last week. On Saturday, August 17, my granddaughter, Kassi Neal, spent the afternoon with me. We prepared a lunch together and had a very pleasant visit.

The Knox Volunteer Fire Department Women's Auxiliary would like to thank everyone who participated in our town-wide garage sale.

With all the generous donations, we were able to raise $350 for the Knox Cemetery.

Ah Tuesday morning, and a beautiful start to a beautiful day on Aug. 20, at least in the little corner of this planet that the Old Men of the Mountain call home.

BERNE — Reprints of Our Heritage, a history of the town of Berne, printed in 1977, are now available.

The price is $15 if picked up at the town clerk's office in the Berne Town Hall, or $20 if mailed. Write: Berne Town Clerk, Post Office Box 57, Berne, 12023. Pay by check, made to Berne Town Clerk.

Michael J. Gross, a 2012 Berne-Knox-Westerlo graduate, recently completed the 14-week boot camp basic training with the United States Army at Fort Benning, Ga. He graduated with the Alpha Company 2-19 Infantry Division.

Gross’s assigned duty station will be at Fort Drum, N.Y., where he will further his infantry skills.

What's old is new again. Walkable communities, where businesses and homes are clustered together, can thrive again with proper zoning. The Knox Town board should approve a business district in the hamlet.
