Candidates for Westerlo town offices will be on hand Tuesday, April 30, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Westerlo Library. Stop in, say “hello,” and get to know them better.

They will answer your questions, listen to your concerns, and take note of your suggestions for the future of Westerlo.

Calling all bakers!

The library’s annual Book & Bake Sale will be held Saturday, May 11 — the day before Mother’s Day — from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the library. Donations of baked goods are welcomed. A sign-up sheet is at the circulation desk.

Everyone else — mark your calendars! This is your chance to treat Mom to something sweet on her special day! There will also be a selection of books, music and videos for sale, along with our lightweight book bags.

We couldn’t do it without the support of our community. Thanks to our friends and patrons who support our book and bake sales and allow us to “keep the change” when paying for faxes or copies.  Every penny makes a difference!

Lego Club

Drop in on Monday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. to play and create with Lego. Lego uses play to open up the world of math, science and cooperative problem-solving to young minds.

The colorful blocks ignite natural curiosity and build confidence as children bring their ideas to life. Miss Lee is also available for homework help.

Story time

Join Miss Lee Wednesday mornings from 11 a.m. to noon for stories, songs, and movement activities designed for infants to children up to five years old.

In addition to developing pre-reading skills, singing, moving to music, and playing instruments all help foster a sense of rhythm and timing that are essential elements in developing the part of a child’s brain that shapes math skills.

Story times are also a great opportunity to meet other parents of small children in Westerlo.

“Let’s Face It”

Seventeen of Rensselaerville artist Bruce Robert Barker’s charcoal and pastel portraits are on display in the Hannay Room at the library.

These finely rendered portraits hint at veiled secrets and emotions in their subjects. What stories lie behind the features captured in historical figures, a veritable rogue’s gallery of instantly recognizable politicians, and seemingly ordinary folk?

The show will be at the library through the end of April, and can be seen during regular library hours.

Our thanks to Peter Keitel, former President of the Bethlehem Art Association, for curating the exhibit.

The Westerlo Public Library is proud to announce a $500 grant from the Stewart’s Holiday Match Program. This grant will be used to purchase membership passes to local museums that primarily serve children and families.

This is a new direction for our library. Offering museum passes to our patrons will expand our services to children and families beyond the books and materials within our own walls to the rich educational and cultural resources a short drive away in the Capital Region. (Watch this spot for future announcements of new museum passes!)

It is through the support of individuals and local charitable organizations, like Stewart’s Foundation and its very generous customers, that we are able to strengthen our existing programs, and develop new and innovative library projects to serve our patrons and the community at large.

Since 1986, Stewart’s Foundation and its Holiday Match customers have awarded over $28 million to thousands of community organizations that serve children’s recreation and education.  Thank you, Stewart’s!

Thirteen of Freehold artist Rita Buttiker’s pastel paintings and charcoal drawings are on display in the Hannay Room at the Westerlo Library through the end of February.

Our thanks to Rita for sharing her work and to Peter Keitel, former president of the Bethlehem Art Association, for curating the exhibit.
