Memoir-Writing Group
The Memoir Writing Group will meet Saturday, Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. This group provides its members a safe and supportive place to learn together. Led by Lila Hollister Smith, the group is open to all who are interested in self-expression through the art of writing. The group meets once a month on the second Saturday of each month and new members are welcome.
Artists’ Group
The Artists’ Group will meet Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 2:15 to 4 p.m. This group provides its members an opportunity to make art together in a spirit of fun and support.
Led by Lila Hollister Smith, the group meets the third Tuesday of the month in the library’s Hannay Community Room, which is also an art gallery. Beginners are welcome.
Bring paper and pencil. If you can sign your name, you can learn to draw! Experienced artists, bring your favorite medium.

The Westerlo Library had a popular display at the Altamont Fair titled “What To Do With That Goldfish Your Child Wins.”
As the new director of the Westerlo Public Library, I want to thank everyone for the warm welcome. Sue Hoadley, the staff, and the board of trustees have been wonderful showing me around and sharing the history of the library.
I appreciate everyone’s kindness. I look forward to getting to know the current patrons of the library as well as inviting new people to stop in and check out all that we have to offer.
Lefty and George
This past weekend was a very busy one for the Westerlo Library! Our Read-To-Me dog, Lefty, visited the library last Friday, and brought his baby “brother,” George, who has recently passed his Therapy Dogs International test to be a therapy dog! Lefty will continue to visit each month with George as his backup. Lefty’s next visit will be on Friday, Sept. 27.
Books in the Barnyard
On Saturday, the Library participated in the Altamont Fair’s Books in The Barnyard. John Gray read his book, “Keller’s Heart,” and signed copies, which the fair gave away to his fans.
Fair-goers seemed to enjoy our Goldfish Aquaponics display — “What To Do With That Goldfish Your Child Wins” — and the fish had a lot of fun watching the people and animals as they came by.
Shorty, the Therapy Dogs International therapy dog who visits us every other Monday, brought his handler, Kelli, and provided stress relief to everyone who stopped by to visit with him.
We gave away lots of books that the Altamont Fair provided — and had a great time reading; speaking to people; and petting the snakes, goats, and chickens that stopped by!

Books in the Barnyard: Could these goats be looking for a story time? Librarians from Altamont, Berne, Guilderland, Schenectady, Voorheesville, and Westerlo will read books about barnyard animals every day at the Altamont Fair, from Aug. 13 to 18, at noon, 3 p.m., and 6 p.m. While supplies last, children who listen to the books will get a free copy.
I am pleased to announce that the Westerlo Library Board of Trustees have appointed Debbie Scott as the new library director. (See related story.)
Prior to this appointment, Debbie served as a librarian at Veeder Elementary School in South Colonie. She began her career as the library director at Heermance Memorial Library in Coxsackie. Debbie officially began her duties on Monday, Aug. 5. Please join me in welcoming her!

Westerlo Summer Recreation Program
The Town of Westerlo Summer Recreation Program will run from Monday, July 29, through Friday, Aug. 2, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the town park.
The program is open to Westerlo residents, aged 6 to 10 years of age. Daily activities will include games, arts and crafts, playground, tennis, basketball, volleyball, and archery.
It’s not too late to join the fun. Registration forms will be accepted on Monday, July 29. Registration forms are available at the library.

Meet a world traveler and art collector, Roberta Villanova Nunn, at the Westerlo Library.
You can chat with Roberta on Monday, July 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. Fourteen paintings and multimedia works collected from her journeys are currently on display in the Hannay Room gallery. She will also talk about her travels at 2:30 p.m., as part of our Summer Reading Program, A Universe of Stories.
Roberta has a passion for education and she has traveled to the ends of the Earth to learn about the geography, history, and culture of the peoples of the world. As she traveled, she collected representative examples of the arts and crafts of each country she visited.
Most recently, she trekked to Ecuador and Peru (2014); Tanzania (2015); Australia and New Zealand (2018); Chile, Brazil and Argentina (2018); and Morocco (2019). This exhibit is comprised of items collected from those three continents: Africa, Australia and South America.
“I’ve experienced how much all people have in common: family, beliefs, and living each day to the best of one’s ability,” she says of her travels. “There is so much beauty in the world both in geography and in the human spirit.”
The exhibit includes a Berber Rug from Morocco, Aboriginal paintings from Australia and multimedia works from Ecuador and Peru. Smaller items and memorabilia are exhibited in the display case.
A long-time resident of Westerlo, Roberta Nunn is a retired teacher of Italian, Spanish, and French. Her exploration of the world began at age 6, when her mother took her on an ocean voyage to visit family in Italy. When she isn’t working in her garden, she serves as a trustee of the Westerlo Public Library.
The show will run through the end of August and can be seen during regular library hours. Our thanks to Peter Keitel, former President of the Bethlehem Art Association, for curating this series of exhibits.
