Concert

On June 14, at 7 p.m. come and enjoy Josh White Jr.  He became, a 'hit' literally overnight at the age of four, by performing with his legendary father Josh White one night at New York's famed "Café Society" nightclub (America's first integrated nightclub). For the next five years, Josh, Jr. performed with his father from New York to Boston to Philadelphia. In 1949, Josh, Jr. landed his first role on Broadway, and as Josh says, "It was type casting..." he played his father's son in How Long Til Summer? with Dorothy Gish and Don Hanmer. While continuing a solo acting career, Josh went on to perform and record with his father for the next seventeen years on radio, television, Broadway, concert halls and nightclubs around the world. A $10 donation is suggested. Tickets are available at the door.

Tick-borne diseases

On June 2 at 11 a.m. join us for Lyme Disease & Other Tick-Borne Diseases. With the warm weather comes the increase incidence of ticks that may transmit a variety of diseases, including Lyme. Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If left untreated, infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system. Lyme disease is diagnosed based on symptoms, physical findings (e.g., bull’s eye rash), and the possibility of exposure to infected ticks. Steps to prevent Lyme disease include using insect repellent, removing ticks promptly, applying pesticides, and reducing tick habitat. The ticks that transmit Lyme disease may also transmit other tick-borne diseases. Come and learn about Lyme disease, as well as other tick-borne diseases, so you are prepared to enjoy the great outdoors more safely. Marilyn Wyman works at Cornell Cooperative Extension on natural resource issues.  Registration is required.

Herbs that Delighted the Victorians

On June 2 at 1 p.m. herbalist and author, Betty Pillsbury, will discuss the herbs that Victorians grew in their gardens and how they were used in cooking and in the household and the folklore behind them. Registration is required. A $5 donation at the door is suggested.

Nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Animated Film, “Loving Vincent” is a masterpiece.  A year after the death of the artist, Vincent van Gogh, Postman Roulin gets his slacker son, Armand, to hand deliver the artist’s final letter written to his now late brother, Theo, to some worthy recipient after multiple failed postal delivery attempts.

Concert

Gathering Sparks will perform at the library on May 23 at 7 p.m.

You will come to listen, and walk away singing. Gathering Sparks is the graceful collision of Eve Goldberg and Jane Lewis — musical friends who blend tight harmonies, finely crafted songs, and a love of participatory singing to create an intimate and uplifting experience.

Their inclusive approach embraces folk, pop, blues, and gospel influences tastefully played on acoustic guitar, piano, accordion, and ukulele.

An Introduction to Tai Chi for Health and Wellness will be presented on May 24 at 11 a.m.

A time-tested and complete movement art that helps an individual focus on health and well-being, Tai Chi has been shown to improve strength and suppleness, balance, and immune function. It lowers stress levels and helps the individual manage pain or problems like high blood pressure and arthritis.

Tai chi benefits people at all ages and fitness levels. While it is accessible to people who are elderly or inactive, it has the depth to challenge the athletic, and broaden the abilities of either.  It cultivates mental focus and relaxation, both essential for personal wellness and productivity.

Book discussion

On May 15 at 7 p.m. join us to discuss "A Streetcar Named Desire" by Tennessee Williams. It is a very short list of 20th Century American plays that continue to have the same power and impact as when they first appeared 57 years after its Broadway premiere, Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire is one of those plays. The story famously recounts how the faded and promiscuous Blanche DuBois is pushed over the edge by her sexy and brutal brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski. Streetcar launched the careers of Marlon Brando, Jessica Tandy, Kim Hunter and Karl Malden, and solidified the position of Tennessee Williams as one of the most important young playwrights of his generation, as well as that of Elia Kazan as the greatest American stage director of the '40s and '50s.  No registration required.

Storytime

On April 10 at 10:45 a.m. drop in and get ready to move in this interactive storytime designed especially for children up to age 5 and their caregivers. We'll read books, sing songs, recite fingerplays, dance and watch a short movie based on a weekly theme. No registration is required.

Mahjong Mania

Every Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m., including on April 10, a spirited group of people get together in the Community Room to play Mahjong. Don’t know how to play?  No problem! They will teach you how. No registration is required.

Insight Meditation

On April 10 at 5:15 p.m. join us for meditation practice. What do you want most deeply?  Seeing your life calmly and clearly helps answer this. Insight Meditation is a simple way to steady your mind, stop wandering in day-dreams, and end the suffering of troubling thoughts. Our group is a place to sit quietly in safety, supported by others; to allow understanding and compassion to arise; to encourage loving-kindness and patience. We welcome those with no experience to advanced mediators', teens to seniors.  give it a try. No registration is required. There is no fee. All are welcome.

Wednesday Matinee

On April 11 at 1 p.m., watch "The Battle of the Sexes" (PG-13). In the wake of the sexual revolution and the rise of the women's movement, the 1973 tennis match between women's world champion Billie Jean King and ex-men's-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs was billed as the Battle of the Sexes and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time.

Knitting Circle

On April 12 at 7 p.m., friendly ladies (men are welcome, but we haven't seen any yet!) will knit and cr,ochet, embroider and quilt, and more. You can learn a new skill here or share your own special talents with others- or just craft in the company of friends.

Wooden Bangles

On April 14 from 10 a.m. to noon. Join us to create a beautiful and colorful wooden bracelet using "decopatch" papers and paste! This bracelet will be a statement with that new outfit or be a wonderful handmade gift for someone special. Registration is required and space is limited.

Book club

On April 14 at 2 p.m. join us for Cooking by the Vegan Book the book to be announced. We pick the cookbook, you pick and make the recipe!

How the cookbook club works; Every month, a cookbook will be selected and will be at the circulation desk, for you to look at and we will print up the recipe of your choice. Sign up online or at the circulation desk, let us know what you're cooking so we don't have duplicates. Registration is required.

Adult board games

On April 14 at 3 p.m. come join us for a night of board games.

Volunteer get together

On April 14 at 1 p.m. there is a volunteer get together at the Dr. Best House. Are you curious?  Have you thought about volunteering for the Dr. Best House and Medical Exhibit but don't know what's involved or how you can share your special talents? You'll have a chance to meet current volunteers and ask questions about volunteer duties. Take an informal tour of the house and enjoy finger foods and punch. Spend as much time as you like and you may find that you would like to join our team. Please register just so we know how many people to plan for.

Come to the library April 2 through April 7 to vote in the Peeps Diorama Contest for Peep-les Choice Award. Make sure you come on in and vote for your favorite Peeps Diorama this week.  The winner will be announced on Monday April 9th.

On April 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. we're cleaning out the craft closet and letting you create to your heart's content. Make anything you want in the time provided. Appropriate for kids in Pre-K and up. Younger children should have a caretaker with them. This is a drop-in program. No registration required.

HEGS

On April 6 from 10 a.m. to noon join Home Educators of Schoharie County a group of homeschooling families with a wide variety of backgrounds, approaches to education, and religious affiliations. We exist to provide secular support for homeschooling families, offer information about homeschooling, and to allow for sharing of educational opportunities. We hope to increase public awareness, acceptance, and support of home education in Schoharie County.

Dinner and a Movie

On April 6 at 5:30 p.m. join us for a showing of  "The Greatest Showman" (PG). This film celebrates the birth of show business, and tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation.

The library will provide pizza and drinks and you bring a snack or dessert to share. Registration is required and space is limited
