Charleen Hoffman

BERNE — Charleen Hoffman is described by her family as tiny in stature but mighty in spirit.

She died peacefully at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany on Monday, Jan. 23, 2023. She was 78.

Born in Clair, New Brunswick, she moved to Long Island as a teen and eventually settled in Berne, where she raised her children.

BERNE — Emily Vincent is carrying on a legacy.

A sheep farmer in Berne, Vincent had a brain tumor removed in January of 2020.

“After I got out of my surgery, I had just the most horrendous vertigo that you could ever have,” recalls Vincent in this week’s Enterprise podcast. “It was really hard.”

BERNE — “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elaine Relyea, completing her journey of life on earth and passing into heaven,” her family wrote in a tribute.

She died peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2023, with her loving children by her side. She was 87.

The local law, which will be subject to a public hearing in February, would transform the assessor’s office to make it more like that of most other municipalities in New York State by concentrating assessment authority in the hands of one person who’s appointed rather than three people who are elected.

Hébert Joseph, who chairs the Rensselaerville Democratic Committee, will be challenging Conservative Chris Smith, owner of Berne’s Maple on the Lake, to represent Rensselaerville, Berne, and Westerlo in the Albany County Legislature.

KNOX — Guy M. Marhafer loved the open road, whether driving a truck or riding a Harley Davidson. Yet he always put his family first. He died on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2023. He was 69.
He was born in Niskayuna, the son of the late Charles Sr. and Wilma Marhafer.

Lisa DeGroff, Committee Member Westerlo, Hometown Heroes

Berne published the draft of its ATV bill that would open up town roads to all-terrain and similar vehicles, albeit with rules and fairly strict penalties for noncompliance.
