Ignorance fueling discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community is beyond alarming

To the Editor:
So much gratitude to The Enterprise for your editorial highlighting the voices and experiences of transgender students at Guilderland High School [“You are seen. You are supported. You are wanted,” June 29, 2023].

The sheer ignorance fueling our nation’s growing discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community is beyond alarming.

As a straight woman with two young adult kids who both have “fairy godfathers” and for whom queer family has always been part of both my actual and chosen tribe, I only wish the haters would take a deep breath, stop believing the alarmist nonsense propagated by right-wing media, and take a moment to listen to the human beings facing an increasing and unspeakable bias.

Then embrace (not just “tolerate”) them for who they are — part of the wonderfully diverse fabric that makes up our society.
