The Helderberg Kiwanis held a pancake breakfast on Sunday, March 26th, during the second weekend of Maple Festival weekend in Knox.

Stewart’s Shops has yet to open a store in the Hilltowns, but is set to announce a new location in either Berne or Knox by next month. Both town supervisors are vying for the spot, saying that it would help their town, while local businesses are wary of competitors.

BERNE — A decision by the governor and the New York State legislature to extend the state’s current budget until May 31 has left many school districts concerned about how they will develop their own budgets without knowing the amount of state aid.

A series of arguments and face-offs appears to have led to the firing of a town employee last September by the Berne Supervisor Kevin Crosier, according to accounts from other town employees.

The backyard of Lawrence Mann, who lives just east of the Berne Public Library, is flooded Tuesday following rain and snow melt in the town of Berne. Mann said that the flooding has affected his property as well as other neighbors’.

BERNE — Richard Earle Spensley was a musician, reader, survivor, and a caring father and grandfather. He died on Monday, March 27, 2017, in Florida, where he lived. He was 76.

“He was a really great man,” said his daughter, DiDi Spears. “With a good sense of humor and a good soul.”

EAST BERNE — A daytime burglary at a home in East Berne may have been due to its seclusion.
