Mother’s Day bake sale

The Westerlo Public Library is proud to announce a $350 grant from the Stewart’s Holiday Match Program. This grant will take us a big step forward in developing an outdoor area for children’s programs, as well as use as a community space when the library is not open for business. Our first purchase will be a sturdy new picnic table.
It is through the support of individuals and local charitable organizations, like Stewart’s Foundation and their very generous customers, that we are able to strengthen our programs, and develop new and innovative library projects to serve our patrons and the community at large.
Over the past 25 years, Stewart’s Foundation and their holiday match customers have awarded over $17 million to thousands of community organizations that serve children’s recreation and education.

The Quilting Group will meet on Saturday, April 12, at 11 a.m. Lead by Lila Hollister Smith, the group is open to all skill levels. The group meets the second and fourth Saturday of each month and new members are welcomed.
Display case
For the month of April the library is displaying Julia Sherman’s rock collection. Nine-year-old Julia is a third grader at Berne-Knox-Westerlo and she loves to collect rocks. Julia says, “Some of my favorites are the fossil rocks, starfish fossil and amethyst that I found after Hurricane Irene washed away my yard. I have also collected rocks from the Herkimer Diamond Mine, different museums and just about anywhere I have been. Thanks for looking at my collection!”

Don’t miss this month’s display of artist Robert DeVito’s “Iconic Skylines” paintings. The brightly painted Skylines are sculpted with layers of color on driftwood evoking memories of a city of long ago.

In the display case at the Westerlo Public Library for the month of March, artist Robert DeVito’s Iconic Skylines paintings are on display. A multimedia artist, DeVito’s brightly painted skylines are sculpted from driftwood with layers of joyful colors of paint that create memories of a city of long ago. He searches along the shores of the Hudson to find old boards to paint. The shape of the board dictates the cityscape that emerges. Each piece is one of a kind and there are no reproductions of his images. His creations are so innovative and original that the Library of Congress has issued copyrights on the idea.
DeVito makes his own colors from raw pigments and the result is unusually bright colors such as canary yellow, aqua blue and candy-apple red. While many artists create a base and then place on highlights, he continually builds on both, creating bold contrasts through a layering effect. Using 19th Century techniques, he uses small, fine brushes, making each piece a time-consuming process.
In addition to his own murals, DeVito planned and executed the restoration of the large mural bracing the SAS terminal at JFK Airport in New York City. His Skylines have been in several galleries such as the Celadon Gallery in Soho and the Parlor Gallery in Douglaston. He has won first place awards at numerous art shows around the region.

Display case
For the month of February the library is displaying Logan McDermott’s Matchbox collection. The Matchbox line of miniature die cast vehicles was launched in 1953 when an engineer at British toymaker Lesney Products scaled down one of their toys, a road roller, for his daughter, whose school only permitted children to carry toys that were small enough to fit into a matchbox. Seven-year-old Logan is a student at BKW. He has been collecting Matchbox cars and trucks since he was able to hold one in his hand. This display is only a small part of his collection.
