The Westerlo Public Library will be closed on Monday, Feb. 16, in observation of President’s Day.
Quilting group
The library’s quilting group will meet on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 11 a.m. Members show and share techniques, gadgets, projects and ideas — you may get help with problems or inspiration.
Lead by Lila Hollister Smith, the group is open to all crafters who use fibers and textiles at all skill levels. The group meets the second and fourth Saturday of each month and new members are welcomed.
Book discussion
The library book discussion group will meet on Thursday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m., at the library. We will discuss Graeme Simsion’s romantic comedy novel, The Rosie Project. Join us; new members are welcomed.
Read to Angus the Dog
Angus will be back on Friday, Feb. 20, from 6 to 7 p.m. Contact the library to register your child for a 15-minute reading session, or just drop in to “Check it out!” (Librarians love saying, “check it out.”)
If your child is self-conscious about reading aloud or reluctant to read at all, he or she may feel more comfortable reading to a dog. Because dogs aren’t judgmental, the child relaxes, pats the attentive dog, and focuses on the reading. Another benefit is the joy children get from being around a dog. Angus is a registered therapy dog. Our thanks to Laura Tenney for volunteering her time and sharing Angus with us.

Happy New Year!
The Westerlo Public Library will be back to our regular hours on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 2 and 3, after being closed for New Year’s Day.
Grant award
We are very proud to announce that the Preservation League of New York has awarded the library $8,400 to prepare a Historic Structures Report for our building. The library was one of 15 organizations throughout the state to receive funding from the Preserve New York grant program.
The Report that we produce with this grant will allow us to document the historic development of our building, assess its current condition, and plan for the challenges of meeting modern needs in a historic facility. The project will be completed over the next year by historic preservation architects Mark Thaler and David Coe.

In the display case
A special thank you to Lila Smith for sharing the making of The Christmas Castle Storybook. The story was written by the Smith family about an eclectic assortment of children’s toys and crafts that were a part of the family’s Christmas celebration for many years. Lila hand-lettered and illustrated the story, then hand-bound them into gift books to share with family and friends. The library also received two copies. They are in our Holiday Collection so you can share the story with your family.

Commemorative brick fund-raiser
We invite you to join us in creating an outdoor programming and reading area for the library. By purchasing a commemorative brick, you can honor your friends and family, memorialize a loved one, or promote your business or organization. You can even split-a-brick between friends and families.
Your personalized, engraved brick will be displayed in the walkway and landscaped area to be built in 2015 in front of the library. Your brick purchase will help not only the library, but will also enhance our community by creating a clean, safe, inviting gathering space downtown.

Check it out: The big brown square of insulation is gone at the Westerlo Public Library, replaced by our beautifully refurbished garage doors. Like the icing on a cake, the doors are a key ingredient in the restoration of our gem of a building, to its former glory. But wait – there’s more! As a gift to the library, Red Sun Builders rebuilt our vandalized picnic table and painted it to match the building. We can’t thank them enough.
