Display case

For the month of September we are displaying Patrick Lendrum’s model farm tractor collection. Six-year-old Patrick has been adding tractors to his collection since he was two. There are some very fine examples of farm equipment for hay-making, tilling and planting, and combining.  Brands include John Deere, New Holland and International Harvester.

The display is just a small part of the growing collection that was started by Patrick’s father when he was a young boy. Patrick and his father love going to farm shows and fairs to look for new pieces to add.

Angus the Reading Dog will visit the Westerlo Public Library again on Friday, Sept. 5, from 6 to 7 p.m. Contact the library to register your child for a 15-minute reading session.

If your child is self-conscious about reading aloud or reluctant to read at all, he or she may feel more comfortable reading to a dog. Because dogs aren’t judgmental the child relaxes, pats the attentive dog, and focuses on the reading.  Another benefit is the joy children get from being around a dog.  Angus is a registered therapy dog.  Our thanks to Laura Tenney for volunteering her time and sharing Angus with us.

Children’s fall

programming

We will be reaching out to you soon with a survey for your input on children’s programming this fall. We want to provide age-appropriate activities on a schedule that meets your needs.  We are ready to offer programs for infants (Mommy & Me), preschoolers, school-aged children (after school) and teens.  But with our limited resources, we want to reach as many children as possible and give you the best value for your investment in town services.  Please don’t hesitate to contact Lee or me with your suggestions.

For the month of August the Westerlo Public Library is displaying Trudy Smith’s “C.T.” porcelain collection. What is “C.T.” porcelain? Just the finest porcelain produced in Germany by Carl Tielsch, Trudy’s great-grandfather.

The pieces on display were manufactured between 1870 and 1900.  Some are marked Altwasser, which was the name of the region before it was annexed by Poland after World War II.  Others are marked Germany or Made in Germany.  A few are marked Silesia. But all include the eagle symbol with the initials C.T. below it, making it very easy to identify.

Trudy’s mother, Martha Tielsch Elpel, was not able to bring any porcelain with her when she immigrated to America. But she later learned about its availability from an antiques article in a newspaper and was very excited when Trudy found some. Now her sisters and nieces all collect C.T., too.

Trudy is very proud of her collection. Take a look and you’ll know why. All of the pieces were purchased at local antique shops or were gifts from friends who knew about her passion for collecting them.
