This Saturday, Feb. 1, is Take Your Child to the Library Day. Join us at the Westerlo Public Library for stories, some fun crafts, a game or two, sweet treats and more. This is a great opportunity to sign your child up for a library card if he or she doesn’t have one yet.
A project of the New York Library Association, Take Your Child to the Library Day demonstrates the transformative role libraries play in the life of every child.
Library survey
The library needs your input. The board of trustees of the library has developed a community survey to gather information about how Westerlo residents utilize the library to better fill your needs.
The survey takes 5 minutes to complete. Pick up a paper survey at the library and fill it out right there or mail it back later. The same survey is available online at the library website, www.westerlolibrary.org.
Whether you are a regular library patron or have not used the library in a while, your input is important to plan for future services and to prioritize resources.
Story time
Our toddler and preschool story time meets on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Join Miss Lee for stories, songs, games and movement activities designed for children ages two to five years old. “Libraries serve as a key link to success in learning for children,” said Mary Fellows, manager of Youth and Family Services at Upper Hudson Library System. “Libraries help children develop their curiosity, the foundation of learning, through investigative activities like science programs or even just exploring the shelves. Fostering the library habit is such a gift to give a child. Parents introducing children to libraries give them a lifelong companion for learning, enrichment, and entertainment. ”

Library day
Saturday, Feb. 1, is national Take Your Child to the Library Day. This day was created to celebrate reading and promote awareness about all that neighborhood libraries have to offer children and families. Launched in February 2012 in Waterford, Conn. it quickly spread to more than 120 participating libraries from 25 states.
In this economy, people often don’t have the finances for leisurely pursuits, but they can bring their kids to the library to play, use the computers, attend special events, take out DVDs, audio books and music CDs — and it’s all free.
Display case
For the month of January the library is displaying Ottilie’s Wall Pocket vases. Pocket vases were used as decorative holders for flowers or air fresheners. Popular during the 1940s and 50s, the majority were imported from Japan, usually featuring flowers or birds. While clay is the most commonly used material for collectible wall pockets, they’ve also been made out of wood, glass, cloth, plastic, and metals such as copper or tin.

There is something new at the Westerlo Public Library. In the place of the rusty, crumbling, creaky, old book drop there is a bright, shiny, stainless steel, new book drop. And, the crisp, clear, universal library logo on the side leaves no doubt that this is the place to return your books and videos to the library. Check-it-out.
Thank you
We couldn’t do it without the support of our community. We thank the Bank of Greene County Charitable Foundation for $1000 in grants. And, we also thank you – our friends and patrons – for supporting our book and bake sales and allowing us to keep the change when paying for fines or photocopies. Every penny made a difference.
And, finally, we must thank Corner Gateway in Slingerlands for the 50-percent discount on the thank you banner in the window. This is what community means; everyone coming together, lending a helping hand for the greater good.

Check out – Librarians love saying “check out” – the free shelf for the Westerlo Public Library’s great selection of advance reader copies of YA fiction. They include your favorite authors and new writers you may like to give a test drive.
Advance reader copies are promotional tools that publishers provide to booksellers, journalists, librarians, and other book reviewers. They are uncorrected proofs and may contain minor misspellings and grammar mistakes, so we cannot add these books to our collection or sell them – they are clearly marked prepublication, not for sale – but we can share them with our readers who love this genre. So, you know, check ‘em out!

Concrete progress: Repairs are underway at the Westerlo Library, which has received a $31,000 Public Library Construction Grant from the State Education Department, covering three-quarters of the cost to install a concrete floor in the cellar, replace five windows, and restore the historic doors on the front of the building’s east wing — all this fall. More work will follow in the spring.
We are proud to announce the award of a $31,000 public library construction grant to the Westerlo Public Library. This fall the grant will fund installation of a concrete floor in the cellar, replacement of five windows, and restoration of the historic garage doors on the front of the east wing of the building.
Next spring we will perform extensive repairs to the exterior wood siding and trim, restore historic windows, install new gutters and paint the building. Contractors are D. Heath Construction and Red Sun Builders.
Work has already begun on the basement project. After several days of prep work, early Friday morning, two truckloads of concrete were delivered, spread and finished. It will be such a pleasure to have a clean, hard surface to walk on down there. Many thanks to Dustin Heath and Jeff Homeyer for all of their hard work.
These projects have been made possible thanks to memorial donations and gifts to the library with 75 percent of the cost covered by this grant from the New York State Department of Education.
