Westerlo Library Notes for Wednesday, September 11, 2019

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month.

Did you know that your free library card not only allows you to check out materials at our Westerlo Library but you also have access to materials at each of the 29 libraries in the Upper Hudson Library System.

Here at Westerlo Library, we have a large selection of DVDs, audiobooks, books and magazines. Your library card also gives you free access to databases, Flipster (magazines from Popular Mechanics to Country Living) and Mango Languages which helps you learn a language. Links are available on our website www.westerlolibrary.org.

Memoir-Writing Group

The Memoir Writing Group will meet Saturday, Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. This group provides its members a safe and supportive place to learn together. Led by Lila Hollister Smith, the group is open to all who are interested in self-expression through the art of writing. The group meets once a month on the second Saturday of each month and new members are welcome.

Artists’ Group

The Artists’ Group will meet Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 2:15 to 4 p.m.  This group provides its members an opportunity to make art together in a spirit of fun and support.

Led by Lila Hollister Smith, the group meets the third Tuesday of the month in the library’s Hannay Community Room, which is also an art gallery. Beginners are welcome.

Bring paper and pencil. If you can sign your name, you can learn to draw! Experienced artists, bring your favorite medium.

Book talk

Have you been reading this month? Come join us and share your favorites and maybe not-so-favorites with the group. The library’s book discussion group will meet Thursday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m. Please join us.  New members are always welcome.

Technology Walk-In Wednesdays

Do you have a new smartphone or tablet, but don’t know how to download digital materials? Need to brush up on your computer skills — or obtain basic skills?

See Amy on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. for free, personalized, one-on-one instruction.

Lego Club

Drop in on Monday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. to play and create with Lego. Lego uses play to open up the world of math, science and cooperative problem-solving to young minds. The colorful blocks ignite natural curiosity and build confidence as children bring their ideas to life. Miss Lee is also available for homework help.

Story time

Join Miss Lee Wednesday mornings beginning at 11 a.m. for stories, songs, and movement activities designed for infants to children up to five years old.

In addition to developing pre-reading skills, singing, moving to music, and playing instruments all help foster a sense of rhythm and timing that are essential elements in developing the part of a child’s brain that shapes math skills.

 Trustees meet

The Board of Library Trustees will meet on Monday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Hannay Room at the library. This is an open public meeting.
