Messages, like this one, on colorfully-painted rocks left in a Colonie park were encouraging for Luanne Nicholson, the publicist for the Guilderland Public Library, so she took this photo to share with others.

Due to the daily increase of confirmed cases of novel coronavirus disease 2019 in Albany County, the Guilderland Public Library is closed until Wednesday, April 1, subject to change as this situation unfolds and executive orders are issued from elected officials.

We are constantly monitoring this ever-evolving pandemic, and striving to maintain operations remotely as much as possible. Please hold onto any materials borrowed, as our book drops are currently locked.  All fines are waived as of March 1, per the Upper Hudson Library System, and expirations for library cards are being extended.

E-book embargo lifted

Following considerable public pushback and hundreds of thousands of petition signatures demanding change, Macmillan Publishing announced on March 17 that it would abandon its controversial embargo on newly released e-books for libraries.

Macmillan will discontinue the unpopular one-copy limit and resume its library e-book pricing model that was in effect until Oct. 31, 2019. In addition, Mascmillan will lower some e-book prices on a short-term basis to help libraries expand their digital collections during these difficult times.

“The timing of this decision could not have been better,” said Guilderland Public Library Director Tim Wiles. “While people cannot access our location and physical books right now, they can still take advantage of our e-books, e-magazines and much more, from the comfort of home. We’re currently seeking to augment our digital materials while we’re closed, and this move really helps us offer the latest offerings to the most people.”

Trustees meet

In the interest of forging ahead during difficult times, our board of trustees held a virtual board meeting on March 19, which was streamed live on our Facebook page and may be viewed any time.  Individuals interested in board candidacy are encouraged to contact Library Director Tim Wiles at as soon as possible for more information.

We will continue to convey updates via email, www.guilderlandlibrary.org, social media channels, and our electronic sign.  Thank you for your understanding and patience as we navigate this unprecedented situation. We urge you to follow all recommended protocols to remain healthy, and we hope to see you again very soon.

Guilderland’s Brigit and Tim Pierce, along with their son, Wyatt, stand at the back of a classroom in Jamaica, where they recently vacationed, as the young scholars display their artwork. “They brought books donated to Guilderland Public Library …  to read aloud and leave with the kids, producing smiles all around,” wrote Luanne Nicholson, the library’s public information officer. “Way to go, Pierce family!”

2020 Census: Be Counted!

Even though we’re closed for the time being, the 2020 Census is in full swing. Most United States households are receiving an official Census Bureau mailing this month, which includes detailed information and a Census ID for completing the census online.

It is vital for everyone to be counted to properly allocate funds to communities like ours, and also to determine adequate elected official representation, based on census results. Make sure you’re counted!

The 2020 Census will pose a few simple questions about you and everyone who is or will be living with you on April 1, 2020. You can complete the census online (the preferred method), by phone, or by mail. Online responses must be completed in one sitting, since you don’t have the ability to save your progress.

One person should respond for each home. That person must be at least 15 years old, live in the home or place of residence themselves, and know general information about each person living there. Residents should be counted where they live most of the time as of April 1, 2020.

If you are responding for your home, count everyone who lives there most of the time as of April 1, 2020, including young children, foster children, roommates, and anyone else living with you, even temporarily.

You can complete the census online or by phone in 13 different languages: English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Russian, Arabic, Tagalog, Polish, French, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, and Japanese.  The Census Bureau also offers webpages and guides in 59 non-English languages, including American Sign Language, as well as guides in Braille and large print. See www.2020census.gov for further information.

The Guilderland Public Library has suspended all programming and meeting rooms as of March 12, 2020. Check our coronavirus page altamontenterprise.com/coronavirus for more local information about the virus and related cancellations.

The 1980 Lake Placid Olympic display at Guilderland Public Library has expanded to include Olympic medals, an Olympic relay torch that originated in Greece, and a hockey stick signed by the 1980 U.S. Hockey Team gold medalists. This display runs through March 30.

In response to the outbreak of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, we are proactively responding to help ensure a safe and sanitary environment for our staff and the hundreds of people who visit us each day.

We are committed to remaining vigilant and prepared for the community we serve, including fulfilling our role as a trusted information source. As such, we are:

— Redoubling our efforts to clean all surfaces frequently;

— Providing gloves, tissues, and sanitizer at several “Stay Healthy” stations located throughout the library;

— Posting links to several official organizations on our website for reference — click on the “Coronavirus Information” button, or from your phone, search our website for “Coronavirus”;

— Displaying instructions on effective hand-washing in our restrooms; and

— Monitoring developments daily with state, national, and global health organizations.

We stand ready to swiftly adjust our protocol as needed, and will continue to keep you informed on all fronts. Meanwhile, here’s what you can do to support good health:

— Stay home if you have a fever and are sick;

— Make sure all who attend meetings at the library are well;

— Cough into a tissue or into the bend of your arm;

— Avoid shaking hands and limit physical touching;

— Wash your hands thoroughly (20-plus seconds of vigorous scrubbing) after using public computers and borrowing material; and

— Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose.
