Guilderland Library Notes for Wednesday, February 19, 2020

Elizabeth Zunon, a graduate of Guilderland High School and the Rhode Island School of Design, will share her story, “Grandpa Cacao: A Tale of Chocolate, from Farm to Family,” with children in kindergarten through fifth grade on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. at the Guilderland Public Library, followed by cocoa and chocolate show-and-tell.

A gift from the Library of Congress: Congressman Paul Tonko presented 30 books to the Rensselaerville Library in 2018. Tonko made a similar donation to the Guilderland Public Library on Wednesday, Feb. 19., and also discussed the Library of Congress Surplus Books Program.

Elizabeth Zunon reads the book she wrote and illustrated, “Grandpa Cacao: A Tale of Chocolate, from Farm to Family,” for kindergartners through fifth-graders on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. at the Guilderland Public Library.

A cocoa and chocolate show-and-tell will follow, and kids can decorate their own chocolate-bar wrapper.  Candy Kraft Candies is kindly donating chocolates for this program. Please register each child for this program online, by phone, or in person.

“Miracle”

We’re commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid with the PG movie “Miracle” on Thursday, Feb. 20, at 2 p.m. Based on one of the greatest moments in sports history, this movie recreates the epic David vs. Goliath Cold War hockey battle that played out with an improbable and stunning result. Popcorn is provided.  

Collage and Cocoa

Tweens and teens ages 11 to 17)are invited to repurpose old magazines into original art with “Collage and Cocoa” on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 3:30 p.m. We’ll savor a relaxing afternoon, sipping cocoa and creating collages at our own pace. Please register online, by phone or in person.

Meet your local police dog

Ever wonder what a police dog does? Come find out on Friday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. as Guilderland Police Officer Don Jones and his canine partner, Zeus, visit GPL! Learn how police dogs are selected and trained, and watch Zeus in action! This is a family / all-ages event.

Missing Piece Board Game Club

Games, food and fun are on the agenda for our twice-a-month adult Missing Piece Board Game Club, Saturday,  Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. Come solo, or bring a friend or two. Bring your favorite games from home, or play a game from our collection of over 100 offerings — it’s your choice. Fill our giant table with your favorites — game on!

Ukulele Jam

Uke players of all skill levels are welcome for our monthly jam session on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m.  Whether you are just getting started, or you play every day, meet up with some friendly folks and have a bit of fun. Bring your own ukulele (or check one out from us!). No registration required, just drop in.

Munchkins & Mocktails 

Playtime with a twist for caregivers! Join us Friday, Feb. 28 at 10 a.m. for fellowship and fun.

As your child plays and socializes, you can enjoy some adult conversation and a morning mocktail.  Please register online, by phone or in person.

Cookbook Club: Special Edition

Leap Day will be hopping at GPL with a special edition of Cookbook Club on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 11:00 a.m.! Alexandra Stafford, Niskayuna resident and author of “Bread Toast Crumbs: Recipes for No-Knead Loaves & Meals to Savor Every Slice,” will be here for an author talk and food demo.

Ms. Stafford will sell and sign copies of her book after the program ($25, cash or check only.) Please register at our adult reference desk and choose your recipe in advance. Bring your completed dish to share on Feb. 29 with serving utensils; we’ll provide the rest!  

He Read/She Read Book Club

Calling all book lovers!  We’re kicking off our new He Read / She Read Book Club with a prize drawing: a Library Lovers’ gift basket!  Stop by our information desk for a slip to enter the drawing, located in a lobby case near our Helderberg Room. 

The winner will be announced on March 2. While you’re there, pick up some information about this engaging new book club and consider signing up! Librarians Dustin and Josalyn Wilder will alternate selecting a title and leading the discussion each month. 

On Tuesday, March 3 at 7 p.m. Dustin (“He Read”) will facilitate the book discussion on “The Chain” by Adrian McKinty.
