The end of summer is near, bringing fall’s colors, crisp nights, and a whole new crop of books being read by the book discussion groups at the Guilderland Public Library. Upcoming films
Two delightful films will soon be shown at the library. The first, on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 6:30 p.m., is Singing in the Rain with Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds. It’s something to see Gene Kelly dancing up and down the curb when his larger-than-life image is projected on the Helderberg Room’s big screen.
Family fare rules the day when we screen an epic film on Friday evening, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. This epic movie is rated PG, and is delightful when seen up-close-and-personal on the big screen. There will be free popcorn at both movies. Enjoy!

If you have not visited the Guilderland Public Library in the past week or so, you may not know that returning books in off hours, or when it’s raining, snowing, sleeting, or when you just don’t want to get out of the car, is now easier than ever before thanks to our brand-new drive-up book drop.
This book drop is located at the library’s driveway exit on Mercy Care Lane and takes just about everything: books, DVDs, CDs; just pull around and drop in your returns. The one thing you cannot return via any book drop is a museum pass; you need to bring it inside and hand it to a member of our circulation staff.
Book donations
If you have books you want to donate to the library, but you don’t think they’re popular enough to sell at the Book Nook or better book sales, you can still make a difference: Put them into the big green box – it says Better World Books – located in the staff parking lot.
The library has arranged with Better World Books to take books you donate and find them a new home; this is a relationship BWB has with many other libraries. One direct benefit is that the library earns a small amount of money from your donation. Furthermore, with every single book that BWB sells, funding is generated to support literacy programs. This sustainable solution has diverted tens of millions of books from landfills, and thanks to your help, it will continue to do so.
Local author book fair
Published authors from throughout Albany County are invited to bring their works and promote them at the library’s Local Author Book Fair on Saturday, Oct. 19.
Every self-published or traditionally published author is encouraged to take part. If you’re interested in taking part in this event (note: there are no fees), contact Natalie McDonough, Head of Programming and Public Services, at 456.2400, ext. 122, or e-mail her at mcdonoughn@guilpl.org.

Come celebrate another wonderful, fun-filled summer reading club with the grand finale in the Guilderland Public Library’s Helderberg Room on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

"Dig Into Reading" with Tom Sieling at the Guilderland Public Library on Friday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m.
Widely acclaimed singer, guitarist, and banjoist, and a hit with kids of all ages, Tom Sieling will perform at the Guilderland Public Library’s Dig Into Reading concert at 2 p.m., on Friday, Aug. 9.
Tom’s show invites and inspires audience participation. He knows how to connect with children, and is “sure to raise even the most reticent out of their seats! We ‘howled at the moon, sang a wild tune,’ and wanted even more!” in the words of Nicole Carner, director of the Pember Library and Museum in Granville, NY.
No registration is required for this concert, but early arrival is encouraged.
Reading records due
Attention Summer Reading Club members: Your reading records are due to the library on or before Friday, Aug. 9. So read those final pages, log your reading, and make sure you get credit for all the wonderful reading you’ve done this summer.
Here’s an idea: drop your reading record off when you come to the Dig Into Reading concert that same day. You’ll have a great time, and guarantee that your reading will be rewarded at the Summer Reading Club grand finale on Thursday, Aug.15.

Researching Native American genealogy presents some very special concerns, many of which will be addressed by professional genealogist Vicki Welch at the Guilderland Public Library on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 1 p.m.
Ms. Welch will describe the unique resources to use if you want to research your possible Native American ancestry. Ms. Welch is an author and historical researcher and has worked for the Nipmuck, Mohegan, and Paugusett Tribes on their Federal Recognition projects. She will also provide some insight into French Canadian ancestry. Bring all your questions.

Kindergarten boot camp
Get your youngsters set for kindergarten by bringing them to the library’s Kindergarten Boot Camp, which is a lot gentler and encouraging than it sounds. This is such a popular program that three sessions will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6, and another two on Wednesday, Aug. 7.
Starting kindergarten is a special and exciting time for parents and children. This is a wonderful introductory, fun-filled experience where soon-to-be kindergarteners can develop their kindergarten readiness skills and celebrate this important milestone.
This program is for children starting kindergarten in September 2013 and a parent or caregiver. Call 456.2400, ext. 4 to register for one of these boot camps.

Have you ever misplaced anything? Maybe you didn’t misplace it. Maybe it was borrowed by four-inch high people who live peacefully under the floorboards of your home. That’s the premise of our First Friday Family Film that shows at 7 p.m., on Aug. 2. The movie tells the story of these “borrowers” who take great pains to go undetected as they ingeniously procure and live off of borrowed items. An inquisitive young boy discovers that these wee scroungers have made themselves at home in his house.
This movie is rated PG. We can assure you that no borrowers will take your free popcorn during the movie.

The Guilderland Public Library’s Community Literary Garden is a quiet, restful place, an ideal setting for peaceful reading, contemplation, and relaxation. All that changes on Saturday, July 27, when from 1 pm to 4 pm, the Garden is transformed into a miniature amusement park for the Library’s Annual Family Fun Day.
That’s right: Next Saturday bring the family to the Library for three hours of fun and games. Play Tip-A-Troll, test your strength against the Purple Dinosaur Hammer, make some Spin Art, draw your own artistic creation on the Library’s windows with glass chalk, and play Sink the Librarian at the dunk tank.
Be sure to try the Can Knock-Down Game, “Bubble, Bubbles, Everywhere,” and snack on ever-popular SnoCones and Popcorn.
There is so much more, including prizes. And we’ve set aside a room to cool off, if it gets a bit too hot for some players.

If you know of a young reader who would like a little bit of help with reading skills, and who is in grades 1 through 4, then the Library’s Book Buddy program is just the thing.
The Book Buddy program pairs young readers with teens entering grades 7 through 12 who’ll share their joy and talent for reading. Together they’ll discover new stories, and the youngster will learn by the teen’s example.
The program runs Wednesday mornings and Thursday afternoons from July 9 through August 16. All teen Book Buddies are taken through a training session; all sessions are held in the Library under Librarian supervision. To sign your young reader up for the Book Buddy program, please call 456-2400 x 4.
Trustees to meet
The Library’s Board of Trustees will hold their monthly business meeting on Thursday, July 11, at 7:30 pm in the Library’s Tawasentha Room. This meeting will feature the swearing-in of new Trustees. You are invited to attend.
Downloading to eReaders
On Friday, July 12, at 3:30 pm, teens are encouraged to bring their eReaders to learn how to borrow and download eBooks – free! – from the Library. This class is for the Kindle, NOOK, iPad, iPod Touch, and iPhone. To register, please call the Library at 456-2400 x 4.

The Brian Patneaude Quartet will give a free Second Sunday jazz concert at the Guilderland Public Library on Sunday, June 9, at 2 p.m. the library advised patrons to come early as this is a popular show.
Repeatedly cited as “Best Jazz” by Metroland magazine, Brian Patneaude – one of the top musicians in New York’s Capital District – will bring his quartet to the Guilderland Public Library for a free Second Sunday Concert on June 9, at 2 p.m.
Formed in 2002, the Brian Patneaude Quartet currently features pianist Dave Payette, bassist Mike DelPrete and drummer Danny Whelchel, Their music is an blend modern jazz styles, melodies and harmonic textures that appeal to the casual listener and jazz aficionado alike.
In addition to leading his own quartet, Patneaude teaches at Schenectady County Community College and Blue Sky Music Studios and maintains www.albanyjazz.com, an online guide to the region’s jazz community.
Friday family movie
Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved fairy tale about Thumbelina is brought to life in an enchanting G-rated movie that will be shown at the library on Friday, June 7, at 7 p.m. Enjoy the movie and the free popcorn.
Get expert help learning the ins and outs of Ancestry.com’s library edition, at a special class at the library on Saturday, June 8, at 10 a.m.
Ancestry.com, which is available free at the library, is a treasure trove of information. Barbara Nichols Randall will demonstrate tips and tricks of using the database. In addition, you will learn how to search the databases included in Ancestry.com New York, and be able to contribute your own family tree free of charge. You will be able to use Library laptops, or bring your own, so that you can apply what you learned. Please register for this class by calling 456-2400, ext. 2.
