Once the novelty of school-free days wears off, teens often wonder what they can do to feel productive and keep boredom at bay. We’ve got the perfect solution: Sign up to become a VolunTeen at Guilderland Public Library this summer.
VolunTeens must be in grades 8 to 12 in the fall and attend the informational session Monday, July 1, at 7 p.m., while parents are invited to attend the concurrent parent informational session in the Normanskill Room.
If you’ve volunteered during a previous summer, simply pick up an application at the library and skip the sign-up night. This is a terrific opportunity to gain valuable resume-worthy experience while helping GPL with our brimming calendar of summer programming.

ESOL tutor training
Literacy NY Greater Capital Region is looking for new literacy volunteers for the 2019-20 school year. A training module is scheduled at GPL on Saturday. July 6, from 10 a.m. to noon.
Training consists of an orientation, three self-paced online modules, and a post-training follow-up class. After training is completed, you’ll be paired with an adult student who is learning English or improving his or her literacy skills.

Aldrich served as a Guilderland Public Library Trustee for nine years.
Christopher Aldrich, on June 12, received the 2018 Library Trustee of the Year Award from the Upper Hudson Library System, a cooperative association of 29 autonomous public libraries serving the 446,626 residents of Albany and Rensselaer counties.
Mr. Aldrich provided dedicated leadership and valued counsel as a Guilderland Public Library Trustee for nine years, and was instrumental in the May 21 referendum approval as chairman of the Design Steering Committee. His positive contributions to the library and the greater Guilderland community will reverberate for years to come.
“If Beale Street Could Talk”
Our Oscar-caliber film series continues with “If Beale Street Could Talk,” on Thursday, June 20, at 6:30 p.m.
The film tells the story of a young black couple ripped apart in early 1970s Harlem by the scheme of a racist cop. Tish and her fiancé Fonny dream of a future together, but their plans are derailed when Fonny is arrested for a crime he did not commit.
Regina King won the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her performance in this film. Also starring Kiki Layne and Stephan James.
Llama Extravaganza
Celebrate National Llama Appreciation Day with us! Bring the whole family Friday, June 21, from 4 to 6 p.m. to meet live llamas and an alpaca, courtesy of Wunsapana Farm in Altamont.

Pride Parade
Staff, friends, and family from Guilderland Public Library, plus the 29 libraries that make up the Upper Hudson Library System, will participate in the Pride Parade in Albany Sunday, June 9.
The parade steps off at noon in Washington Park, at the intersection of Robin and State streets. From there we will march down State Street, over Lark Street, up Madison Avenue and back into the park at the intersection of Madison and New Scotland Avenues.
The Pride Parade is hosted by the Pride Center of the Capital Region, the oldest continuously operating LGBTQ center in the country.

On May 21, voters approved the 2019-20 library budget by 63.5 percent, and the capital construction bond by 58 percent. Catherine Barber, Barbara Fraterrigo, and Barry Nelson all secured five-year terms on our board of trustees.

Officers from the Guilderland Police Department will conduct the Rape Aggression Defense program for women ages 16 and up, starting Tuesday, June 4 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. The RAD course is 12 hours total, divided into three four-hour sessions (also on June 5 and June 12).
This is not your typical self-defense course; it is designed to teach how to survive attacks. Wear comfortable clothing and footwear, and consider bringing a light snack and water. No experience necessary; seats are limited. Attendance at all three sessions is mandatory. Please register for all sessions online, by phone, or in person.

Our Sunday Concert Series continues with the Finger Lakes Guitar Quartet on Sunday, May 19, at 2 p.m.

Leland talks about “Happiness”
John Leland is the award-winning journalist and author of the book, “Happiness is a Choice You Make: Lessons From a Year Among the Oldest Old.”
On Tuesday, May 21, at 7 p.m., Mr. Leland will share his experiences profiling six elders in New York City, followed by a book sale and signing. This presentation is made possible through collaboration with the Albany Guardian Society.

Folk musician and beloved Hudson Valley resident Pete Seeger would have been 100 years old on May 3, and we’re commemorating him with a special slate of weekend activities!
First, join us Friday, May 3, at 6 p.m. for a special performance of songs by Pete Seeger and his contemporaries — The Weavers, Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, and more — featuring the talents of local musician Michael Eck and friends. We’ll celebrate with birthday cake too!
Next, join us on Saturday, May 4, at 11 a.m. for a multimedia lecture and question-and-answer session celebrating the life and legacy of Pete Seeger. Noted music writer Jess Jarnow, author of “Wasn't That a Time: The Weavers, the Blacklist, and the Battle for the American Soul,” delivers this engaging talk, enhanced by photo projections and music.
This program is presented in partnership with the Empire State Plaza Performing Arts Center.
Better Angels Workshop
