We’ll have curbside goodie bags chock-full of booklets, coloring pages, and fun surprises for kids in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade to enjoy. No registration is needed; simply stop by to take one per child on Saturday, Feb. 6, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Tax help

Unfortunately, none of the AARP TaxAide sites, including ours, will be providing services during this tax season.  However, we’ve compiled a list of handy resources to assist you at:  https://bit.ly/GPLTaxes and will update this page as needed.  Federal (IRS) tax forms and instructions are available to pick up during curbside hours inside our Normanskill Room. New York State tax forms are expected mid-February.

Great Backyard

Bird Count

From Feb. 12 to 15, the Audubon Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology invites us to watch and count as many birds as we can find and report the numbers. Visit birdcount.org and sign up for a free eBird account.  Then, venture out on the designated dates and start counting!

We’d like to know what you observed outdoors!  Email us at with a photo of yourself and/or your family birdwatching—or better still, a photo of a bird you observed—along with a list of the birds you saw. We'll choose a random winner for a prize of a 10-pound bag of quality birdseed!

Construction update

A well-defined outline for our children’s addition is materializing as steel reinforcements and walls are positioned. Once this area is fully enclosed, it will be heated and the concrete slab will be poured. Cannabis for

pain management

Chronic pain is often the result of multiple root causes and illnesses, and doesn’t always respond to conventional pain medicine. Holistic approaches to pain management, including botanical compounds such as cannabis, can address root causes of pain, limit side effects, and work with other therapies.

Learn more about cannabis therapies such as cannabidiol (CBD) in this virtual session entitled “Holistic Pain and the Role of Cannabis” on Wed. Dec. 16 at noon. with David Gordon, M.D., ADOIM, IFMCP, Integrative Medicine and Medical Cannabis Physician and owner of Four Pillars Health and Wellness. This program is offered in collaboration with Brookdale Senior Living.  Please include your email when you register on the Events tab of our website; Brookdale will send you the invite to the Zoom session.

Dial-A-Story

goes global

With all the screen time we subject ourselves to these days, listening to a short story provides a welcome break to rest our eyes while igniting our imagination. Each week, our Dial-A-Story features new tales for adults and children.

There are at least 59 languages spoken throughout the Guilderland area, so we’ve added a new international languages line on Dial-A-Story to begin incorporating some of these. Call 518-519-4111 and make a selection to hear an engaging story anytime.  A story in Tamil is currently featured by choosing option 3 on this phone line.

Pronunciator

We have an interactive tool on our website called Pronunciator to help you learn any of 163 languages with personalized courses, movies, music and more. There’s also a new COVID-19 course in 101 languages. See https://guilderlandlibrary.org/learning-tools to explore all the options.

Service hours

Our curbside checkout hours are: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday from 1 to 7 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. 2 p.m. Our return shed hours are: Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Card collection: The Guilderland Public Library is collecting homemade holiday cards, up to 5-by-7 inches in size, for clients of Community Caregivers. Drop the cards off in the designated box at the library’s curbside table during curbside hours through Dec. 16; no envelope is needed.

It’s not technically winter yet, but our construction crew is gearing up for the cold weather. Outside, the footings and foundations are complete and backfilled on the children’s addition at the east end of the building. The next step is configuring underground utilities under the slab.

Inside, the former children’s area and fiction section has been completely cleared out. Once we are solidly into winter weather, interior work here will take precedence. Sprinkler and public bathroom renovations are progressing as well.

Most of our collection is still accessible; however, if something you would like to borrow is not, we will gladly request it from another local library. Usable space throughout the library has shrunk significantly, making it challenging for staff and the construction crew to maintain adequate social distancing.

Due to these current constraints, we are aiming to re-open for limited public browsing in mid-January. We will continue to keep you posted.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we strive to safely manage the rapidly-changing logistics involved. Updates are posted on https://bit.ly/GPLbuildingproject, Facebook and Instagram. To subscribe to our weekly eNews and monthly newsletters, go to https://bit.ly/GPLeNews.

We’re partnering with Community Caregivers on a Holiday Card Project to spread some joy to our neighbors! Create a holiday card and drop it off at GPL until Wed. Dec. 16.  Our goal is to collect 200 holiday cards, which Community Caregivers will distribute to their clients.

Instructions:  Create one of more holiday cards no larger than 5-by-7 inches. Feel free to include an uplifting message inside your card and sign the card if you wish, or keep it anonymous.

Drop off your card(s) in the Holiday Card Project box at our curbside table during curbside hours.  Envelopes will be provided by Community Caregivers, and they will mail the cards collected to their clients of all backgrounds.

Community Caregivers provides services that enable individuals of all ages to maintain their independence, dignity and quality of life, including non-medical assistance and caregiver support.  Your card is sure to brighten someone’s day. Thank you for participating!

Multilingual community

At last count, there are at least 59 languages spoken throughout the Guilderland area. Some of the most prevalent are Mandarin, Telugu, Hindi, Spanish, and Tamil.

We have an interactive tool on our website called Pronunciator to help you learn any of 163 languages with personalized courses, movies, music and more. There’s also a new COVID-19 course in 101 languages. See https://guilderlandlibrary.org/learning-tools to explore all the options.

Dial-A-Story

With all the screen time we subject ourselves to these days, listening to a short story provides a welcome break to rest our eyes while igniting our imagination. Each week, our Dial-A-Story features three new tales – one for adults, one for children, and a new international language option too! Simply dial 518-519-4111 and make a selection to hear an engaging story anytime.

A temporary wall separates the construction zone from part of the accessible collection at the Guilderland Public Library, significantly limiting usable interior space.

The interior of the Guilderland Public Library looks very different these days from what you may remember. To the left of our main circulation desk, a temporary wall now separates the construction area, where the children and teen areas will be built, from the relocated collection to the left of it.

Here, the DVDs still stand — one of the few parts of our collection that have not moved — plus youth and young adult fiction and non-fiction materials, for now.

Most of our collection is still accessible; however, if something you would like to borrow is not, we will gladly request it from another local library. Usable space throughout the library has shrunk significantly, making it challenging for staff and the construction crew to maintain adequate social distancing.

Due to these constraints, we must hold off on safely reopening to public browsing. We are aiming for mid-January at this point, and will continue to keep you posted.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we strive to safely manage the rapidly-changing logistics involved with both the pandemic and the construction project. The Wi-Fi signal has been boosted at Guilderland Public Library’s parking lot, extending almost to Western Avenue.

Outside, groundwork is being laid for the new 6,555-square-foot children’s addition on the east end of the building. Inside, we’ve shifted much of our collection to other parts of the building to accommodate construction work.

The vast majority of our print materials for children, teens, and adults is still accessible during this transition period. For anything requested of us that is currently in storage, we will gladly procure it from another local library. Public bathrooms are also being renovated to ensure compliance with the Americans with disabilities Act and add unisex and family options.

Due to the double challenge associated with stewarding this construction project while simultaneously managing the pandemic as cases escalate — for example, allowing for adequate social distancing while our usable interior space shrinks significantly to one-third the square footage — our board of trustees have deemed it prudent to delay reopening public browsing until mid-January at the earliest. Curbside services will continue as usual.
