Library within a library: Part of the collection at Guilderland Public Library is now temporarily housed in the Helderberg Room, due to construction activity. The building is currently closed to the public, with plans to reopen for browsing in December.

If you've driven by the library recently, you can see the progress being made outside as we prepare ground on the east end of the building for the new 6,555-square-foot children's addition. Inside, many changes are unfolding too. It looks somewhat unrecognizable these days, with exposed ceilings, empty shelves, and a minimalist stripped-down ambiance.

We’re shifting much of our collection to other parts of the building to accommodate construction work. For example, non-fiction books are now housed in the Helderberg Room temporarily.

Throughout this relocation process, we’re striving to keep the maximum amount of materials available to patrons. We are pleased to report that the vast majority of our print collection for children, teens, and adults is still accessible during this transition period.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through the rapidly-changing logistics involved. Updates are posted on https://bit.ly/GPLbuildingproject, Facebook and Instagram. To subscribe to our weekly eNews and monthly newsletters, go to https://bit.ly/GPLeNews.

It became necessary to close the Normanskill Room to public browsing recently, due to construction.  This space is now needed as a staging and processing area for curbside materials. We are preparing to welcome patrons back into the main building for browsing in December — please stay tuned.

Site preparation for construction of a 6,555-square-foot children’s space is underway on the eastern end of the Guilderland Public Library.

Landscapes and logistics are changing rapidly at the library! We are currently on time and on budget with this project to upgrade our 1992 building. When completed — currently estimated at Oct. 1, 2021 -— “Guilderland's Gathering Place” will feature:

— A brand-new children’s area, including a new program room and play space;

— A dedicated teen room;

— Renovated restrooms;

— A new meeting room;

— Outdoor plaza seating in front and back; and

— An outsourced café / used bookstore.

Inside, work is underway to renovate bathroom facilities for public use, making them compliant with the Americans with disabilities Act, and creating five single-use unisex options.

We have sold or donated numerous pieces of well-worn furniture to other area libraries and at least eight local not-for-profits, as well as to the general public, thereby freeing up much-needed space for construction workers to maneuver more easily.

Outside, the ground is level on the east end of the building as we prepare to begin constructing the 6,555-square-foot children’s addition.

The east end of the Guilderland Public Library, as viewed from the periodicals section of the library’s interior, is being prepped to construct a new children’s services addition.

The library is abuzz with activity! We now have a few solid weeks of construction under our (tool) belt, though it’s just the beginning. Much flexibility and innovation has been required this year, and the need to pivot continues. We are excited to witness this much-anticipated project take shape and track the daily progress.

Inside, we’ve removed all of our ceiling tiles and grid to install our first-ever sprinkler system, along with updating the electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and data wiring systems on our 1992 building.

Outside, we’re building a ramp on adjacent lots on Western Avenue, allowing machinery access to the east end of the building to build the new children’s wing. The flat area on Western Avenue will eventually become a much-needed overflow parking lot, adding 43 spaces.

We are currently on time and on budget with this project. When completed — estimated at Oct. 1, 2021 — ‘Guilderland’s Gathering Place” will feature:

— A brand-new children’s area, including a new program room and drop-in play space for toddlers;

— Our first-ever dedicated teen room;

— Renovated restrooms that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, including five single-use restrooms;

— A new meeting room;

— Outdoor plaza seating in front and back; and

— An outsourced café / used bookstore.

GPL continues to serve patrons at the highest level possible, currently through online, curbside, and Normanskill Room browsing options. In addition, we expect to expand public access to the building in the near future, so please stay tuned.

Fall usually means a busy season of entertaining. With a different dynamic this year, don't let stress take over – simply take out your slow cooker and prepare holiday meals with ease.

Guilderland Public Library’s collection, periodicals, reading room, and public computers are walled off in plastic as part of the library’s construction project.

We are off to a solid start with our building project, which officially kicked off on Thursday, Oct. 15!  The first step inside involves the removal of all ceiling tiles and grid, which gives contractors the ability to work on the infrastructure behind the lighting — a new sprinkler system, electricity, and data wired throughout.

Whole sections where patrons used to sit, browse, or congregate are encased in protective plastic, augmenting the plexiglass panels that stand ready for welcoming patrons back safely to the main areas of the library before the end of the year. The scene is somewhat reminiscent of a transparent Halloween fun-house maze, while still allowing for daily staff duties.

Outside, trees are being cleared on our adjacent lots to the east, 2220 and 2218 Western Ave. This area will become an overflow parking lot, accommodating 43 more parking spaces. During construction, this staging area will allow heavy equipment access to the hillside area where the 6,555-square-foot children's services addition will be constructed. We are being judicious with tree removal, retaining as much of the natural landscape as possible.

We will continue to keep you posted as this project unfolds. Updates are also posted on our website:  http://bit.ly/GPLbuildingproject, Facebook and Instagram. We encourage you to subscribe to our weekly eNews and monthly newsletters at:  https://bit.ly/GPLeNews.

The Guilderland Public Library is a polling place on Tuesday, Nov. 3, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. See guilderlandlibrary.org/vote2020 for comprehensive information on voting this fall.

Our building project is in process! We kicked off the official start with a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 15. This renovation project of our 1992 building, more than three years in the making, is slated for completion next fall.

Among the objectives are enhanced safety through the installation of a sprinkler system, restrooms that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, a reconfigured parking lot, and a drive-up book drop.

Another key consideration is space. Even before the age of social distancing, cramped quarters were commonplace, especially for children. When our building opened almost 30 years ago, we did very little programming; last year, we did 797 programs. The plans involve adding more space for kids, including a dedicated teen room; more meeting and study rooms; and a flexible multi-use area for all to enjoy.

This library is for everyone. Our tagline is, “Guilderland’s Gathering Place” and, though gathering has had to happen online or at Tawasentha Park due to the pandemic and further impacted by construction, we envision strengthening our mission as a community hub once this project is complete and COVID-19 is no longer a threat.

We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding as we strive to serve you to in the best possible manner, keeping safety our highest priority. More information on this project may be found at:  http://bit.ly/GPLbuildingproject/
