We’ll be using an eBook on our Hoopla digital platform: “Indian-ish: Recipes and Antics from a Modern American Family,” by Priya Krishna. This selection is available to download instantly; there are no wait times or holds. Look for the instructions on how to find the title in our events calendar listing and register to participate.  Then, choose any recipe, make it at home, and we’ll meet up online Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. to talk about the book and our culinary results.

Senior Clerk Heather Nelson helps process a three-month backlog — 130 boxes of about 1,400 materials — at the Guilderland Public Library while other staff members quarantined, sanitized, and checked in about 17,000 returned items. The library is currently processing about 5,500 curbside items per month, working at half-staff per Governor Andrew Cuomo’s executive order, to minimize risk of virus exposure.

Current hours for contact-free curbside checkouts at the Guilderland Public Library are: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m. Returns may be deposited Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. into one of five sheds in our parking lot (designated by the green canopy). All items are quarantined for 96 hours, then sanitized externally before being reshelved.

How to contact us: For general questions, please call 518-285-0050 or email ask.librarian@guilderlandlibrary.org. For circulation questions or to notify us you’re here to pick up your curbside materials, please call 518-285-0671 or email ask.circ@guilderlandlibrary.org.

Fines: Please note that all fines are still waived. If you should receive a fine notice, we apologize for this error. The system of quarantining returned materials for 96 hours, plus the process of waiving thousands of fines, may result in some oversights. If this should happen, please contact us at: ask.circ@guilderlandlibrary.org to get it quickly resolved. We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

Updates: We are constantly strategizing ways to expand services while remaining safe, and we encourage everyone to sign up for our weekly eNews and monthly newsletters at:  https://guilderlandlibrary.org/get-to-know-us/things/newsletters/ to receive the latest GPL updates. Read It Forward:

Antiracism

The topic of antiracism is an important discussion that our country is having right now. We want to help foster this conversation, so we'll give you a book to read that you don’t need to return. We simply ask that you pass it along (“read it forward”) to a family member or friend when you’re done reading it, encouraging that person to pass it forward when they’re done, and so on, to keep it circulating.

You can choose from two books: Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Nickel Boys” by Colson Whitehead; or “How to Be an Antiracist,” the critically-acclaimed nonfiction work by author and historian Ibram X. Kendi. Copies are available on a first-come, first-served basis. To participate, fill out our survey here:  https://bit.ly/GPLRIFsurvey.

You can download it as an eBook or audiobook, and register on the Events tab on our website to participate in the online discussion.

This month, we’re diving into The book “ Woman of Troublesome Creek” by Kim Michele Richardson, which is available for download as an eBook or audiobook on Hoopla and Overdrive. To participate in our lively book discussion, join Wilder Reads Book Club on goodreads.com.

After joining, we’ll send you an invitation to register for the moderated online event taking place on Friday July 31 at 7 p.m. in Goodreads.

Read it forward:

Antiracism

The topic of antiracism is an important discussion that our country is having right now. We want to help foster this conversation, so we'll give you a book to read without any expectation that you need to return it to us, ever!

We simply ask that you pass it along (“read it forward”) to a family member or friend when you're done reading it, encouraging that person to pass it forward when they're done and keep it circulating.

To participate, fill out our survey starting Aug. 1 here: https://bit.ly/GPLRIFsurvey

New Language

Even if visiting another country is not feasible at the present time, learning the native tongue of that land is always an option. In fact, learning a new language just got easier!

Our new Pronunciator database features a whopping 163 languages and customized classes tailored to your progress and abilities. Access this dynamic resource, using your trusty GPL library card as your passport, here:  https://guilderlandlibrary.org/research-databases/.

Manage your time

Jim Croce sang decades ago that “there never seems to be enough time to do the things you want to do once you find them.” Would you like to “squeeze the day” and complete more of your well-intentioned but seemingly-elusive goals?

National Board Certified Integrative Health and Wellness Coach Rhonda Allen can help you do just that with her Manage Your Time workshop on Tuesday, July 28, at 6 p.m. Bring your specific challenge if desired to this interactive workshop, and leave empowered with your personalized action steps. Sign up on the Events tab of our website for the email invitation.

What’s for dinner?

This age-old question can get a little old, especially during the summer months. Many of us are cooking more at home these days, and perhaps not shopping as often as we used to, so we may find shortages on our shelves.

On Wednesday, July 29, at 6:30 p.m., Karen Roberts Mort from Cornell Cooperative Extension will instruct us on Cooking with What’s On Hand. She’ll cover how to take an inventory of your pantry, fridge and freezer and create simple, healthy meals with their contents. Budget-friendly shopping strategies and recipes encouraging creativity will be shared as well.

Online registrants will receive the link to participate via Zoom the day before the event.

Books in good condition may be deposited in these new blue Discover Books bins located in Guilderland Public Library’s side parking lot.

The recently reinvigorated civil rights movement in our nation has spurred the entire Upper Hudson Library System community to closely examine our culture in order to ensure that our commitment to serving our patrons is applied equally across the diverse spectrum we serve.

To that end, 12 Guilderland Public Library staff members recently participated in a virtual brainstorming discussion with 47 of their UHLS colleagues to establish a committee to assess library programs, services, recruitment, hiring, and other aspects of library operations over the next year or more.

“Our overarching goal is to provide equal access to services for all, regardless of race or ethnicity,” said Guilderland Public Library Director Tim Wiles. “I'm delighted to see our staff's strong interest in social justice manifested by participation in this voluntary effort.”

The UHLS Statement Condemning Racism and Pledge to Help Make a Difference, adopted July 8, 2020 by Executive Director Tim Burke and the UHLS Board of Directors, may be found on the home page of their website: https://www.uhls.org/. A wide array of anti-racism resources may be found at:  https://uhls.overdrive.com/collection/1086653.

Lew Warner, Guilderland Public Library’s head of maintenance, crafted this adorable schoolhouse-themed Little Free Library for use in his hometown of Cherry Valley. In addition to the Little Free Library set up in front of GPL, others have popped up in the area, including on GPL Library Director Tim Wiles’s front yard.

Our contactless curbside service by appointment to process materials we have been holding since mid-March (“holds”) is underway as of Tuesday, June 16. Anyone who requested items prior to the pandemic shutdown is being notified and asked to set up their appointment for pick-up.

Our hours of operations for these parking-lot transactions will be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Tuesday and Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. Two staggered teams of staff are operating in our building — which remains closed to the public — with stringent procedures to help ensure everyone’s safety.

Our comprehensive COVID-19 Reopening Safety Plan, as required by New York State, is posted on our website at: guilderlandlibrary.org/gpl-reopening-plan. This page also lists a series of frequently-asked questions to help answer concerns as we systematically move forward with gradually reinstating services.

Census update

According to the latest census figures, Guilderland is well above the state and national rates. However, roughly 30 percent of households have not yet responded.

Please take a few minutes to respond today to minimize the follow-up door-knocking phase scheduled to begin on Aug. 11. When everyone is counted, we all win in terms of more accurate local funding and representation in Congress. Go to 2020census.gov or call 844-330-2020 for more information.
