Hunters are invited to submit recommendations to regional Waterfowl Hunter Task Forces to help set the dates of the fall 2017 duck-hunting seasons for each of the state’s waterfowl hunting zones by Feb. 19.

ALBANY COUNTY — The Albany County Helderberg-Hudson Rail Trail rehabilitation project has been named the 2016 Project of the Year in the Transportation category by the New York Chapter, Capital Branch of the American Public Works Association.

VOORHEESVILLE — AARP Tax-aide, the nation’s largest, free, volunteer-run tax-assistance and preparation service will once again be preparing income tax returns at St. Matthew’s Parish Center in Voorheesville beginning Friday, Feb. 10.

WESTERLO — Pioneer Clubs members and leaders at First Baptist Church at 618 Route 143 in Westerlo will celebrate Pioneer Clubs Sunday on Jan. 29 at 9:30 a.m.

VOORHEESVILLE — The Albany County Rural Housing Alliance Inc. has over $230,000 in grant funds from the New York State Homes and Community Renewal program to assist first-time home buyers with mortgage down payment and closing costs.

RENSSELAERVILLE — The annual High Peaks Music Residency and Festival is accepting applications from outstanding violinists, violists, cellists, mandolinists, and pianists for an intensive 10-day seminar, running from Aug. 7 to 17.

ALTAMONT — The Best of Spain trip sponsored by St. Lucy/St. Bernadette Church in Altamont is still available with the $100 discount per person extended until Jan. 18.  The trip, escorted by local travel expert Jean Gagnon, will depart from Albany on March 30 and return April 10.

Because she has lost several friends and relatives to breast cancer, the owner of a new hair salon in Guilderland says that a percentage of the profit from all sales of wigs at her shop will go to research for a cure.

GUILDERLAND — Signs-ups begin on Jan. 17 for Guilderland High School students interested in playing spring sports.

Spring sports start March 6, and include boys’ and girls’ track and field, boys’ and girls’ lacrosse, softball, baseball, boys’ tennis, and unified basketball.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation reminds snowmobilers to ride responsibly and exercise caution as they use the state’s 10,500 miles of trails, and the office offers these guidelines.

Sydney Salerno, a Voorheesville student, will be competing in the Miss New York Teen USA pageant this coming weekend, from Jan. 13 to Jan. 15. The teenager has kept a busy schedule in preparation for the pageant, and she’s excited to see what’s in store this weekend.

With the holiday season over and winter promising to be around for a while, the Depot Lane Singers are offering interested singers the opportunity to escape cabin fever as they begin to practice for their spring concerts.

GUILDERLAND — The Guilderland Police Department has been instructing Citizen Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) training over the past year and will continue to offer these classes in 2017.
