GPD prepares citizens for active shooters

GUILDERLAND — The Guilderland Police Department has been instructing Citizen Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) training over the past year and will continue to offer these classes in 2017.

CRASE is a nationally recognized curriculum developed by the Advance Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training Center at Texas State University, designed to provide strategies, guidance, and a proven plan for surviving an active-shooter event.

This course has been taught to many citizen and civic groups in the town, as well as special classes held for employees of Crossgates Mall, according to a release from the police department; the last class at the mall was held in October, before the active shooter event there in November.

“Several employees of the mall that had attended our training indicated that they knew exactly what to do when the real event had occurred,” the release states. Another session for mall employees is scheduled in January.

The “Guilderland Police Department” social media site will list dates for citizen training classes.
