Free tax prep

VOORHEESVILLE — AARP Tax-aide, the nation’s largest, free, volunteer-run tax-assistance and preparation service will once again be preparing income tax returns at St. Matthew’s Parish Center in Voorheesville beginning Friday, Feb. 10.

Through mid-April, AARP Tax-Aide volunteers will prepare and electronically file federal and New York State Tax returns for low- and middle-income taxpayers, to anyone of any age with special attention to those aged 60 and older. Membership in the American Association of Retired Persons is not required.

Volunteers, who are trained and certified by the IRS, also provide free electronic filing of the tax returns including direct deposit of refunds. Appointments are required.

Tax-Aide volunteers work one-on-one with taxpayers to help them prepare their income tax forms and answer tax-related questions at no cost to the taxpayer.

Tax-return preparation will begin at St. Matthew’s Parish Center starting Friday, Feb. 10, and on three additional Fridays: Feb. 24, March 10, and March 24. To make an appointment, call the New Scotland Senior Outreach at (518) 439-9038.

In addition to their tax information documents, taxpayers are requested to bring a copy of last year’s tax return as well as their Social Security cards with them to their appointment.
