A week before the Guilderland school board election, one candidate faces a lawsuit.

In Guilderland, people shared stories of opioid addiction and recovery in a high school forum last Wednesday  shortly after Albany County announced a task force to prevent and treat opioid abuse in the community.

GUILDERLAND — The Guilderland Public Library’s board of trustees has approved an operating budget for 2017-18 of $4,038,583, based on a tax levy of $3,689,217.

GUILDERLAND — Three incumbents and two challengers are running for three seats on Guilderland’s board of education.

Guilderland native Justin Veldhuis, who loves soccer and Spanish, has a job that combines both.

The $35,000 to repair Guilderland’s 1800s cobblestone schoolhouse that was originally included in the superintendent’s draft budget has brought heated discussion.

Guilderland school district officials asked students to tell them why so many of them said that safe school buildings were a top priority. Do students not feel safe, officials wanted to know, and, if they don’t, what are they afraid of? They organized a focus group to hear their thoughts, but just one student came.

In Guilderland, three seats on the school board and two seats on the library board will soon open. Five town residents have picked up informational packets about running for the library board. The election for both boards will be held May 16.

Sometimes yesterday’s snow is enough to close school down, again.

Guilderland’s draft school budget for next year, projected at $98 million, will add teachers and restore some programs that were cut in recent years.
