On Monday, March 10, it was such a cold wintry day that I decided to spend my time making turkey soup. Tuesday, March 11, wasn’t much better. It was too cold to go anywhere so I did laundry. Wednesday, March 12, was another wintry day with four inches of snow falling through the day. Then, an ice storm struck.

The Fox Creek Market in the Berne hamlet closed this month for its own unique reasons, but it has done so before, emblematic of a cherished, social business in a rural town that is subject to the pressures of a sparse customer base.

Monday, Feb.24, was very cold, barely made it to 17-degrees. It was very warm in my house. It was my Zoey day. She is in the midst of cutting teeth and chewing on everything, especially toys. She loves to eat. She pulls herself up and grabs everything with those little hands, especially glasses.

The cause of an accessory building fire was not officially determined on Wednesday. Knox Fire Chief Bill Vinson said the building appeared to be used for storage and mechanical work and stood about 50 feet away from the nearest house.

EAST BERNE — Patrick Stempel was straight with his words, his care, and his chainsaw.
