ALTAMONT — Pastor Gregory Zajac, of St. John’s Lutheran Church, will give a sermon on Aug. 3 titled "Yes, With the Help of God," based on Matthew 14:13-21, the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand.

Worship begins at 9:30 a.m. and the church is located at 140 Maple Ave. in Altamont.

GUILDERLAND — St. Boniface Episcopal Church has Sunday services at 8 and 10 p.m. with children’s chapel and friendship coffee hour following. 

ALTAMONT — The “Canyon Country” tour offered by St. Lucy/St. Bernadette Church in Altamont is almost sold out. The trip to western national parks will leave from Albany on Oct. 15 and return on Oct. 23, led by Jean Gagnon, manager of the Travel Plaza Center in Latham.

Lovers of quilts and fans of rural architecture are invited to “The Quilts of Berne and Knox” on Sunday, Aug. 3. They’ll see fabric quilts, both traditional and modern, and learn about barn quilts, the wooden painted patterns that are popping up on barns in the Hilltowns.

Last week, the Guilderland School District added future meetings to discuss a consultant’s report released last month that provided options to save the district money.  Five of the six options proposed closing elementary schools, and four of the five proposed closing Altamont Elementary School.

GUILDERLAND — While many churches are facing declining congregations, St. Boniface Episcopal Church in Guilderland is growing — both in congregants and space.

GUILDERLAND — Douglas C. Lawton, a dedicated firefighter and a loving man of few words, died on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, with his loving family by his side, after a valiant three-year battle with colon cancer. He was 57.

Mr. Lawton was born on April 26, 1957, to Charlotte M. Lawton and the late Donald “K” Lawton.

“It’s a neighborhood icon," said Berry Ahearn, who has for 30 years walked to the store to shop. "It’s always been there. I can’t imagine life without it.”

GUILDERLAND — Dr. Milford Becker, veterinarian, put in writing, before his death, that he wanted his land preserved. Now, seven years after he died, his wish is coming true.
