So, uh, you tweens out there: Do you have a clue as to what you’re going to give the adults in your life this holiday season? Just possibly, the staff at the Guilderland Public Library can help.
Come to the library on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m., and learn how to Stitch a Gift! You’ll find out how to make the coolest treasures (believe us; the folks will love it) by cross-stitching using plastic canvas, needle and yarn. Draw your own design, stitch it, and then turn it into a keychain or an ornament … or a gift.
Call us at 456-2400, ext. 4, and let us know you’ll be there.
Sisters
If the classic movie the library is showing on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 6:30 p.m., does not get you into the holiday spirit, then we don’t know what will.
Think Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, and sisters Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen. (Throw in Dean Jagger and Mary Wickes for good measure.) Add a failing Vermont inn, and the plot line of a successful song-and-dance team becoming romantically involved with a sister act, and you have two hours of warm and fuzzy moments. It’s all about what happens one white Christmas.
The popcorn we serve just makes the whole experience a classic.
Lego Club
Our Li’l Lego Club for children in kindergarten through grade 2 meets on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 3:30 p.m., in the story hour room. Young children will gather and create imaginative, wondrous “what-is-that?” structures with Legos.
It’s all about imagination and creative play with friends. Bring your own bricks or create with ours. As usual, creations that you bring to show off will be kept separate from the library supplies. Please call 456-2400, ext. 4 so we can “block” out some space for you.
Monsters at your university?
There probably weren’t monsters where you went to school, so if you want to find out what the experience would’ve been like, then you need to come to the First Friday film on Dec. 6, at 7 p.m.
Take a trip back in time to when star Monsters, Inc. employees were just two promising young students at Monsters University in this fun Disney/Pixar prequel.
Bus trip
For all of you who’ve signed up for the Dec. 7, bus trip to New York City please come to the library well before the bus trip’s 7:30 a.m. departure time. The busses will leave at 7:30 a.m., sharp. Rosters showing what bus you’re on will be posted in front of the library.
Please park your car along the Western Ave. side of the parking lot; this makes it easier for our daily customers to use the library.
And, just a reminder that if you’re planning on visiting the 9/11 World Trade Center Memorial, you need to know that you must make reservations ahead of time at www.911memorial.org/visit. There is a nominal $2 processing charge per person.

Tweens and teens are invited to have a blast at International Games Day at the Guilderland Public Library on Saturday, Nov. 16, by learning games played by kids their age in other countries.
Tweens own from 11 am to 12:30 pm, when they’ll be able to toss some Angry Birds at our Bad Piggies’ fort, and play the XBox 360 version of MineCraft on the Helderberg Room’s big screen. Then they’ll play games played by tweens in other countries, and test out some new board games.
The afternoon is time for teens from 1:30 to 3 p.m., when they can try a LARP? Wondering what in the world LARP is? Come give it a try during International Games Day at the library. Aye, Dark Overlord! is a live action role playing game that is a lot like Improv acting set in a fantasy world. Fast-playing and silly, Munchkin can reduce any role playing group to hysteria.
Just let us know you’re coming. Call 456-2400, ext. 4 to play.
The Miserable Ones
Victor Hugo’s vast historic novel, transformed into a movie will make its library premiere as the Monday Matinee Movie showing on Nov. 18 at 2 p.m.

It’s a matinee, so naturally there’s free popcorn. Come in and enjoy.

Is the Mediterranean Diet a fad, or fantastic?
The Mediterranean Diet seems to be quite popular these days, particularly with people who are looking to decrease their risk of heart disease; on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m., at the Guilderland Public Library, you can find out if this diet is as good as it seems or if it’s just another fad.
If you’re interested in reducing your risk of overall mortality, cardiovascular mortality, cancer, and incidence of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, you should attend this Consumer Health Information program on the diet’s potential benefits.
ShopRite’s registered dietitian Kristen Caponera, MS, RD, will provide the latest information about this regimen and prepare a healthy pasta salad for tasting. There’s also a short trivia game and gift basket giveaway. Register online or by phone.
Just Dance Party
Kids in kindergarten through second grade are invited to a Wii Just Dance party at the library on Friday, Nov. 8, at 6:30 p.m.
Wii Just Dance games on the big screen are so much fun it’s almost wrong. You have all the room in the world, well, actually, just in the Helderberg Room, but that’s quite a space to dance and move to your favorites. While you wait your turn to dance, create cool crafts and color when you need to rest your dancing feet. Balloons, hop-scotch, and make-your-own bookmark crafts, round out this fun-filled evening.

Put the voices of Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, and Cloris Leachman behind the animated antics of the prehistoric comedy that’s showing at the Guilderland Public Library on Friday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m., and you have a movie that kids are going to love and cause adults to howl.
The plot is simple: After the cave that the world’s first family, the Croods called home is destroyed, the family must undertake the journey of a lifetime. Here’s where the fun begins, the family travels over a spectacular landscape with the aid of an inventive boy. Their outlook is changed forever.
The film is 98 minutes long; it’s rated PG because there’s a bit of scary action. There’s free popcorn, so the scary bits shouldn’t be a problem. In case you’re wondering, our Public Performance Site License prevents us from using the actual name of the movie in promotions, that is why we headlined this with a homophone.
Science enrichment for tweens
Tweens are encouraged to sign up for the Adventures in Earth Science program being held at the library on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 2:30 p.m. There’s no school that day, so come on down!

When actress Angelina Jolie announced her decision to have a preventive double mastectomy after learning she carried BRCA-1, the gene that greatly raises the risk of breast cancer, the news generated much discussion of the issue; Dr. Brutus appeared on WNYT Channel 13 News to provide some perspective on Jolie’s decision to have the risk-reducing surgery. Price Chopper Pharmacy has partnered with the Guilderland Public Library to offer both the flu and shingles vaccines at the library on Thursday, Oct. 10, from noon to 4 pm.
Did you know that one in three people will experience shingles in their lifetime? As you are probably aware, shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. The virus lays dormant in your body and may re-erupt as Shingles later in life. It can result in a painful rash, blisters, and possibly other complications. Your best prevention is to get vaccinated. The FDA-approved vaccine, Zostavax, is for individuals aged 50 or older and is covered by most health insurance and Medicare Part D plans. Age requirements may apply in some cases, check with your individual plan.
The same coverage applies for the flu vaccine, which the Centers for Disease Control recommends for everyone 6 months or older. For this clinic, Price Chopper can offer flu vaccines to anyone 19 and older. Younger patients need to see their doctor.
You must register to get vaccinated; call 456-2400, ext. 2, or register online at bit.ly/Shingles-Flu-Clinic. After you register, Price Chopper Pharmacy will contact you for more information on your insurance coverage, and they can tell you the cost of the vaccines if you do not have insurance.

The film is rated G, and is a little less than 90 minutes long. The free popcorn is rated Good, and the Helderberg Room’s big screen is an ideal place to watch Kai do his thing.
Sensory story time
The next Sensory Story time will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 6:30 p.m. Held on the second Wednesday of every month, these sessions are designed for children with autism spectrum disorder, and a parent or caregiver. The Guilderland Public Library is hosting two fascinating genealogical classes on Saturday, Sept. 28. Both classes are presented by Tom Moffatt, who has been doing genealogical research for more than two decades, and who has developed some new ways of using DNA to aid research.
The class, Solving Genealogical Puzzles through DNA, at 10 a.m., shows how DNA offers exciting new tools for solving family history puzzles. Moffatt will explain, in everyday language, the types of tests, their pros and cons, which work best, and how to integrate the results into traditional paper and database family histories.
Then at 2 p.m., French Canadian and Acadian Genealogy, through DNA Testing, enables you to learn from Moffatt how DNA supplements the extensive paper records, many now available online, that chronicle the settling of French North America.
There will be ample time allowed for questions and interaction.
Moffatt has developed special expertise in English, Canadian, and French Canadian records, early New England, plus Irish, and English records, as well as American and English military records. He enjoys the opportunity to discuss ways in which a DNA testing program might assist in solving genealogy brick walls.

Published authors from throughout Albany County are invited to bring their works and promote them at the Guilderland Public Library’s Local Author Book Fair on Saturday, Oct. 19.
The event kicks off with a keynote talk by New York Times bestselling author Joseph E. Persico – who will be a huge draw – so this is an ideal venue for every self-published or traditionally published author to gain additional exposure. Along with the opportunity to sell your books to the public — right before the holidays, too – you’ll also have a chance to reach out and connect with other area authors, speak with fans interested in your work, and possibly market your books to new and unexpected channels.
The library is well known as a venue for literary events. It has hosted capacity crowds that heard author talks by Joyce Carol Oates, Civil War novelist Jeff Shaara, authors and journalists Paul Grondahl and Gregory Maguire, sportscaster Tim Green, Holocaust survivor Ela Stein Weissberger, artist and writer Will Moses, New Yorker magazine Cartoon Editor Bob Mankoff, Lincoln historian and author Harold Holzer, and crime novelist Alafair Burke. Such events attract people from as far away as the Berkshires and the North Country, to the mid-Hudson college communities and beyond.
The fair is promoted by the library on the front page of its current newsletter (circulation 19,000), on the organization’s website at www.guilpl.org) Facebook page (“Guilderland.Library), Twitter feed (@GuilderlandLib), and to the area’s print and electronic news media.
If you’re interested in being part of this signal literary event (note: there are no fees), please contact Natalie McDonough, director of Programming and Public Services, at 456-2400, ext. 122, or e-mail public@guilpl.org.

Tweens have a voice in their library
The library’s Tween Advisory Board will meet on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m., in the library’s youth study room.
You’ll help Librarian Debbie Sternklar plan library events that interest you. You will also contribute to selection of library resources and services for your age group. This month you’ll brainstorm ideas for winter events.
If you’re ages 9 to 12, and are interested in having a voice in tween programs, then register and come to the meeting. Call 456-2400, ext. 4 to register.
Better book sale
There will be a Better Books Sale in the library’s Normanskill room on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proceeds support everything from the purchase of special furnishings and equipment for the library to obtaining prizes for the summer reading club.
These once-a-month sales are just one way to get books for keeps. The Book Nook, with a paperback stand in the library's lobby and a retail kiosk just inside the library’s doors, sells donated books and media as well as those removed from the library's collection. Items that don't sell are taken by our volunteers to many different outlets: nursing homes, shelters, community centers, senior citizen centers and to small libraries in communities around the Capital District where they often earn money for these facilities, or are just donated. The main thing is to see that no worthy item is neglected and that people who do contribute to the library are assured their donations are valued.

Board committees concerning for example, finance; personnel/labor/management; policies and procedures; building and grounds; and long range planning meet on the second Thursday of off months. Special meetings are occasionally held as situations require.
Board Meetings are video recorded and broadcast on Guilderland cable channel 17 at 2 p.m., on the Sunday following the meeting, and again at 1 and 7 p.m., on the Monday following the meeting.
Sundays at the library
