Guilderland Library Notes for Wednesday, September 25, 2013

The Guilderland Public Library is hosting two fascinating genealogical classes on Saturday, Sept. 28.  Both classes are presented by Tom Moffatt, who has been doing genealogical research for more than two decades, and who has developed some new ways of using DNA to aid research.

The class, Solving Genealogical Puzzles through DNA, at 10 a.m., shows how DNA offers exciting new tools for solving family history puzzles. Moffatt will explain, in everyday language, the types of tests, their pros and cons, which work best, and how to integrate the results into traditional paper and database family histories.

Then at 2 p.m., French Canadian and Acadian Genealogy, through DNA Testing, enables you to learn from Moffatt how DNA supplements the extensive paper records, many now available online, that chronicle the settling of French North America.

There will be ample time allowed for questions and interaction.

Moffatt has developed special expertise in English, Canadian, and French Canadian records, early New England, plus Irish, and English records, as well as American and English military records. He enjoys the opportunity to discuss ways in which a DNA testing program might assist in solving genealogy brick walls.

 Scanning

If you have a document you need scanned, we can help.  Put our new public scanning service to work for you and transform printed documents into e-mail-able files, or use the optical character reader feature to turn your typewritten document into an electronically editable file. The service is available any time the library is open.

Your librarians stand ready to help, so come in and give it a try.

Board holds special meeting

The library's board of trustees will hold a special meeting on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 p.m.  The purpose of this meeting is to advance the progress of a number of time-sensitive projects.

The board ordinarily holds business meetings on the second Thursday of alternate months. For the remainder of fiscal year 2013-14, business meetings are slated for Nov. 14; Jan. 9, 2014; March 13, 2014; and May 8, 2014.
