After all the Halloween fun at the Guilderland Public Library on Friday, Oct. 31, we’re asking that you consider donating your adult and children’s hero and superhero costumes to the library for use during next year’s Every Hero Has a Story Summer Reading Club. GPL staffers will be available on Saturday, Nov. 1, to receive your costumes.
Don’t forget that GPL’s theme for this Halloween is Lions, and tigers, and books! Oh, my! We’re showing the movie version of L. Frank Baum’s most-loved work, The Wizard of Oz. The first showing is at 11:30 a.m., and the second is at 3 p.m.
You should come in costume. Each showing will begin with a Halloween parade through the library, and kids of every age — costumed or not — are encouraged to join the parade.
Just come into the library and Follow the Yellow Brick Road through the doors of The Emerald City. You’ll find yourself in the Helderberg Room with comfy mats down front for relaxed viewing. There will be popcorn. And some candy for the kids.
Many GPL staff members will be dressed up as their favorite Wizard of Oz characters. You’ll meet The Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man, Scarecrow, and at least one or two Dorothy’s. The Apple-Throwing Tree (who, we promise, will not throw any apples) will be there, too.
It will be fun. You can pretend you’re in Oz, and “not in Guilderland anymore, Toto.”
Li'l Lego Fun-For-All
The Li’l Lego Club for children in kindergarten through grade two is back with a fun-for-all on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 3:30 p.m.
You’ll meet in the story hour room and use your imagination for some creative play with friends. Bring your own bricks or create with ours. As usual, creations that you bring to show off will be kept separate from the library supplies. Register by calling 456-2400, ext. 4.
Learn how to create an allergy-free pantry
Acclaimed cookbook author Colette Martin will present The Allergy-Free Pantry at GPL on Saturday, Nov. 8, at noon.
You’ll learn a wealth of clever gluten-free and food allergy recipe substitutions, based on Martin’s just-published The Allergy-Free Pantry: Make Your Own Staples, Snacks, and More without Wheat, Gluten, Dairy, Eggs, Soy or Nuts. She will demonstrate how easy it is to prepare pantry staples in the safety of your own home. She'll also share some of her favorite recipes including sunflower seed butter, egg-free mayonnaise, and gluten-free breadcrumbs.
Martin is an advocate for food-allergy awareness and author of the book Learning to Bake Allergen-Free. Copies of her books will be available for purchase and signing by the author.
Martin's last book talk and food demo was a big hit, so be sure to register soon. Call 456-2400, ext. 2 to reserve your place.
Better-Buy Books
Borrowing books from the library is great, but you have to give them back so someone else can read them. But when you find a book that you really, really like – as you will at the Better Books Sale on Saturday, Nov. 8, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. — you get to keep it.
So stop by. Pick up a bargain. Along with bestselling books, you’ll find top-rated CDs and DVDs. There are piles to pick through. Enjoy!

“Lions, and tigers, and books! Oh, my!” is the Halloween Theme at GPL on Friday, Oct. 31, when we hold a film festival of L. Frank Baum’s most-loved work, The Wizard of Oz.
The movie will be easy to find. Just come into the library and follow the Yellow-Brick Road through the doors of The Emerald City. You’ll find yourself in the Helderberg Room with comfy mats down front for relaxed viewing. And there will be popcorn, of course. Showings of the movie will be at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.; the movie is 1 hour 32 minutes long, so stay for as long or as short a time as you want.
Be sure to say “hello” (or “We’re not in Kansas anymore”) to all the staff members who are dressed up as Wizard of Oz characters. You’ll meet the Good Witch of The North, the friendliest Wicked Witch of the West as ever you’ve seen, at least one Dorothy (maybe two or three), and the apple-throwing tree (who, we promise, will not throw any apples).
We invite you to come in costume, too. It’s going to be a lot of fun for everybody. Oh, and pay no attention to that man behind the curtain…

“Shazaam!” kids! Spider-Man is coming to the Guilderland Public Library on Saturday, Sept. 27, from noon to 2 p.m., and what he wants to do is help you get your own library card. You can have your picture taken with him and talk with him. He will not, however, scale the side of the library.
Parents, did you know? Children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning. GPL offers library cards to youths ages five through 16 years of age, however a parent’s or legal guardian’s signature is required. Parents or guardians, please bring two forms of identification that show your home address; for example, a driver’s license and utility bill.
GPL offers a variety of programs that stimulate an interest in reading and learning. Preschool story hours expose young children to the joy of reading, and our summer reading clubs keep children reading during school vacation and have been shown to be the most important factor in avoiding the decrease in reading skills that educators refer to as “summer learning loss” or the “summer slide.”
In addition to books, magazines, CDs and DVDs, computers, games, software, and other multimedia materials, GPL offers downloadable eBooks and lets you borrow eBook readers.
If you want more information on Spidey’s appearance at GPL, you can look it up on our website at www.guilpl.org.
Do you know the name
of Mr. Wilson’s dog?
It’s Fremont. If you knew that or how many dimples there are in a golf ball then you should come test your knowledge at Tuesday Night Trivia on Sept. 30, at 7 p.m.
Join trivia master and GPL staffer Joe Michon-Huneau, and test your smarts at team trivia at GPL on the last Tuesday of September, October, and November.
Prizes will be awarded to the winning teams. Teams should be made up of four or fewer people. This is an ideal activity for adults and teens. Please register your group by calling 456-2400, ext, 2.
RAD self-defense training
Starting on Wednesday, Oct. 1, and continuing for three evenings thereafter, GPL is offering a very important self-defense training class exclusively for women. It’s called the Rape Aggression Defense System, and it’s a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, and progresses on to the basics of hands-on defense training.
You must register for this program by calling 456-2400, ext. 2; you must commit to attending all four classes. These sessions are held from 6 to 8:45 p.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 1, Thursday, Oct. 2, Wednesday, Oct. 8, and Thursday, Oct. 9.
Students must be female and over the age of 14. Your fitness level does not matter.
CSI: Cherry Hill
The 1827 murder at the Cherry Hill farm — home of the well-known Van Rensselaer family — will be the topic of discussion and examination on Friday, Oct. 3, at 2 p.m.
The crime aroused tremendous public interest, and the subsequent trial resulted in the last public hanging in Albany. Learn about women’s roles and legal rights, social class, crime and punishment, and slavery in New York State during the early 19th Century, and decide who you think was really guilty or innocent.

Did you know? Every four minutes, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer. Every ten minutes, someone dies from a blood cancer. On Saturday, Sept. 20, you can do something to help prevent that from happening.
In partnership with the Guilderland YMCA, where they’re passionate about providing wellness support to those in need through programs such as Livestrong at the YMCA (focused on helping cancer survivors), and Circle of Champs (focused on helping families with a child who has a life-threatening illness) — and in recognition of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the Guilderland Public Library is holding a Be the Match bone-marrow registry drive.
We’re asking community members (18 to 44 years old) to come to the Y on Winding Brook Dr., between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., and complete the simple paperwork and test – a painless cheek swab that takes just a few seconds – to join the registry. If you’re 45-60 years old, you can register online at the Be the Match website where you’ll learn other ways you can help.
You can turn the impossible into the achievable for a patient in need of a cure. To learn more about the event and the Be the Match registry, please visit www.bethematchfoundation.org/goto/guilderland.
To help us know in advance who’s coming, please sign up with the library, by phone at 456-2400, ext. 2, or online at bit.ly/bone-marrow-drive.
Just so you know: 70 percent of all patients who need a bone marrow transplant don’t have a matched donor within their family. Their chances are far better (of finding a matching, unrelated donor) on the national Be the Match registry, where matches range from 76-97 percent, depending on race and ethnicity. That’s why we need your help.
Coach speaks
Union College’s Men’s Hockey Coach Rick Bennett, who famously steered the Dutchmen to the NCAA Division 1 National Championship, will speak at GPL on Monday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m., and he’s bringing the trophy with him.
The beginning of next season is but weeks away; Coach Bennett will discuss the team’s winning season and the Dutchmen’s plans to defend their title in the coming season. This is a sporting event not to miss.
Rite Aid flu vaccine clinic
For those of you who work during the day, GPL is hosting a flu vaccine clinic on Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 3 to 7 p.m.
The pharmacist will bring all the necessary forms for you to fill out the day of the clinic. The flu vaccine is covered in full by many insurance plans; a few plans may charge a co-pay. If you don’t have health insurance, the cost of the flu vaccine is around $20 to $25. Please register by calling 456-2400, ext. 2, or by go to the event calendar on www.guilpl.org and click on Sept. 23’s Rite Aid Flu Vaccine Clinic.
The Place Beyond the
Pine Trees
GPL’s Local Connections Film Series kicks off Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 6:30 p.m., with a premier of a movie filmed in Schenectady.
This flick tells the tale of a motorcycle stunt rider who turns to robbing banks as a way to provide for his lover and their newborn child, a decision that puts him on a collision course with an ambitious rookie cop navigating a department ruled by a corrupt detective.
This movie is rated R. Popcorn will be served. GPL will have a second screening on Thursday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m.

Guilderland Public Library Director Tim Wiles took the ALS “Ice Bucket Challenge” in front of the library on Friday morning, Aug. 22. As part of the event, Wiles issued the challenge to the directors of the other 28 member libraries of the Upper Hudson Library System located throughout Albany and Rensselaer counties, as well as to the executive directors of UHLS, Tim Burke, and the New York Library Association’s Jeremy Johannesen.
You can see video of Wiles’s challenge at bit.ly/GPL-issues-IBC.
His dunking was part of a week-long charitable campaign during which the library’s staff raised more than $100 to be donated to the St. Peter’s ALS Regional Center in Albany.
According to the St. Peter’s website, “Since 1988, St. Peter’s ALS Regional Center has been providing people with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), sometimes referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and their families with a comprehensive, specialized blend of services and resources.”
We’ll keep you posted on who answers Wiles’s challenge.
Do you like Guinness?
If you’re a fan of Guinness – Alec, not the beverage – then you should come to GPL today, Thursday, Aug. 28, at 6:30 p.m., to see Sir Alec end up as the scapegoat.
In this 1959 film, Guinness plays two roles, one as a teacher who vacations in France, and the other a French nobleman intent upon avoiding the consequences of some extraordinarily bad decisions. Bette Davis is simply awesome as the nobleman’s mother, who teacher-suddenly-nobleman Guinness must placate.
This movie is a treat, and one not often seen on television. Give yourself a Thursday night out, and come see Sir Alec in one of his most charming roles. His slow burns are classic, and Bette Davis is ever so slightly over the top.
Schedule changes
GPL will be closed from Saturday, Aug. 30 through Monday, Sept. 1, for the Labor Day Weekend. GPL will open at 10 a.m., on Tuesday, Sept. 2.
With the end of August comes the end of summer hours at GPL. From Sept. 2 until June 30, 2015, GPL’s hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Here’s what we’re reading at the Guilderland Public Library. Join us.
One thing you can be sure of – there’s always a lot going on for book lovers at GPL. We have several book discussion groups you’ll be interested in. And they would welcome you. Try one out; you don’t know what you’re missing.
Snoops in the Stacks
We’re a lively bunch that enjoys reading and talking about mysteries. Many are long-standing mystery lovers and others are new to the genre. What is really interesting is reading authors one might never think to try and being pleasantly surprised, or even better – hooked. This program is Tuesdays at 7 p.m. We will be reading:
— Sept. 2, Just One Evil Act, by Elizabeth George;
— Oct. 7, One Good Turn, by Kate Atkinson; and
— Nov. 4, The Luminaries, by Elizabeth Catton.
Night Owls
We read a selection of fiction and nonfiction books on topics of current social and literary interest. Lively discussions always ensue in this group, who meet on Mondays at 7:30 p.m. We will be reading:
— Sept. 8, Flight Behavior, by Barbara Kingsolver;
— Oct. 13, President’s Club: Inside the World’s Most Exclusive Fraternity, by Nancy Gibbs and Michael Duffy; and
— Nov. 10, Burgess Boys, by Elizabeth Strout.
GPL Page Turners
The GPL Page Turners (formerly Knit One, Read Too!) read recently published books from a variety of genres, including contemporary fiction, historical fiction, and mystery, as well as the occasional nonfiction book. New members are always welcome! This group meets Wednesdays at 2 p.m. We will be reading:
— Sept. 10, The Dressmakers of Khair Khana, by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon;
— Oct. 8, The Orchardist, by Amanda Coplin; and
— Nov. 12, Orphan Train, by Christina Baker Kline.
Great Books
Are the classics still worth reading? We think they are. These are the books that continue to be read in times, places, and cultures far removed from those in which they were written. Since these books have had so much to say to so many different people, they’re very likely to hold meaning for us as well. Join us as we discuss books that you’ve always wanted to read, or may have read growing up but want to read again. This group meets Thursdays at 7 p.m. We will be reading:
— Sept. 4, Inferno, by Dante Alighieri;
— Oct. 2, Darkness at Noon, by Arthur Koestler; and
— Nov. 6, Candide, by Voltaire.
You are welcome to join any book discussion group listed. To register, please call 456-2400, ext. 2, and let us know you’re coming.

Winners of the grand prizes and the drawing prizes will be contacted by phone on Friday, Aug. 22. We wish you luck.
