Guilderland Library Notes for Thursday, September 12, 2013

For those of you who work during the day, the Guilderland Public Library is hosting a Rite Aid flu vaccine clinic at the library on Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 4 to 7 p.m.

The professionals from the Rite Aid Pharmacy will bring all the necessary forms for you to fill out the day of the clinic. The flu vaccine is covered in full by many insurance plans; a few plans may charge a co-pay. If you don’t have health insurance, the cost of the flu vaccine is around $20. Register by calling 456-2400, ext. 2 or by going online to bit.ly/GPL-Flu-Clinic.

Mystery writer at the library

Join your fellow mystery fans at the library as we welcome acclaimed mystery writer Julia Spencer-Fleming on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m.

Spencer-Fleming will discuss how she creates her popular novels that surround the antics of Reverend Clare Fergusson and Police Chief Russ Van Alstyne novels. These novels are set in a fictional town near Glens Falls and Fort Edward.

She will also talk about her upcoming novel – her eighth – Through the Evil Days, coming in November. Copies of her earlier books will be available for sale at the program, with thanks to Janet Hutchinson of The Open Door Bookstore.

Please register for this program by calling 456-2400, ext. 2 or by going online to bit.ly/Spencer-Fleming.

Teddy Bear Tea Party

Children ages 2 ½ through 5 and their favorite teddy bear or other stuffed pal are encouraged to get their parent or caregiver to call 456-2400, ext.  4 or go online to bit.ly/Teddy-Bear-Tea so that they can all come to a Teddy Bear Tea Party at the library on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 10:30 a.m. This will be teddy-themed books and songs, “tea,” and a snack. A parent or caregiver must accompany the child. Please note: Food Allergy Alert! This program involves food. Please contact us if you have questions.

The great DiCaprio

Our Public Performance Site license prevents us from using the actual title of the Gatsby-esque movie we will show at our Monday matinee on Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. We can tell you there will be popcorn.

Tweens have a voice in their library

The library’s Tween Advisory Board will meet on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m., in the library’s youth study room.

You’ll help Librarian Debbie Sternklar plan library events that interest you. You will also contribute to selection of library resources and services for your age group. This month you’ll brainstorm ideas for winter events.

If you’re ages 9 to 12, and are interested in having a voice in tween programs, then register and come to the meeting. Call 456-2400, ext. 4 to register.

Better book sale

There will be a Better Books Sale in the library’s Normanskill room on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proceeds support everything from the purchase of special furnishings and equipment for the library to obtaining prizes for the summer reading club.

These once-a-month sales are just one way to get books for keeps. The Book Nook, with a paperback stand in the library's lobby and a retail kiosk just inside the library’s doors, sells donated books and media as well as those removed from the library's collection. Items that don't sell are taken by our volunteers to many different outlets: nursing homes, shelters, community centers, senior citizen centers and to small libraries in communities around the Capital District where they often earn money for these facilities, or are just donated. The main thing is to see that no worthy item is neglected and that people who do contribute to the library are assured their donations are valued.

Board meets

The library's board of trustees will hold its next bi-monthly business meeting tonight, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m., in the library’s Helderberg room.

The board holds business meetings on the second Thursday of alternate months. For the remainder of fiscal year 2013-14, business meetings are slated for Nov. 14; Jan. 9, 2014; March 13, 2014; and May 8, 2014.

Board committees concerning for example, finance; personnel/labor/management; policies and procedures; building and grounds; and long range planning meet on the second Thursday of off months. Special meetings are occasionally held as situations require.

Board Meetings are video recorded and broadcast on Guilderland cable channel 17 at 2 p.m., on the Sunday following the meeting, and again at 1 and 7 p.m., on the Monday following the meeting.

Sundays at the library

Now that the summer is effectively behind us, the library will once again be open on Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m.  Weekday hours continue to be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The library’s website at www.guilpl.org  is always open for eBook and music downloads, reserving that latest bestseller you want to read, and finding out about upcoming events … such as the Local Author Book Fair on Oct. 19.
