A Westerlo woman has been charged by the Albany County Sheriff’s Office with animal cruelty. The 64-year-old woman reportedly had over 100 animals living on her property in what police described as “deplorable conditions.”

A man who had been charged with shooting a Canada goose out of season took a plea deal at Westerlo Town Court on Wednesday night, despite having said the charge was due to a bureaucratic error.

Westerlo’s highway superintendent, Keith Wright, will be retiring on June 29.

The decision comes after months of multiple site tests, public hearings, and arguments for and against the 120-foot tower.

A fire in Westerlo which lasted over 12 hours on Monday left a home demolished. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

A member of the gallery accused the planning board chairwoman of a conflict of interest by expressing a desire for cell service, and threatened a legal battle should the tower be approved.

Westerlo is currently facing a decision of whether or not to construct a 120-foot cell tower in order to improve cell service in the area. But some residents are more concerned about potential health risks and the visual impact.

Westerlo has pitched in to help a local woman suffering from cancer. Orchestrated by her sister, Betty Filkins, with help from the Westerlo Reformed Church, the Westerlo Volunteer Fire Company, and the local band the Hilltown Ramblers, a fundraiser will be held on Saturday, April 8, at 7 p.m. to benefit Ruth Savino.
