Following a public hearing on a solar bill, and preceding a town workshop meeting, the Westerlo Town Board passed its first law of 2017, which sets requirements for residential and commercial solar arrays.

The board was warned by the Westerlo assessor about a tax exemption that could cost the town, and encouraged instead of implementing the tax to use a Payment in Lieu of Taxes agreement with solar farms.

WESTERLO — The committee working to increase broadband access in rural Westerlo wants to draft a new agreement with Mid-Hudson cable. The committee is asking residents who want service to make their needs known.

After hearing a number of questions in a public hearing on a drafted solar law, the Westerlo Town Board tabled the issue, with the likelihood of at least another public hearing on the law. 

A chimney fire was put out by the Westerlo Fire Department Wednesday morning. Two residents, including a lifetime member of the department, escaped, but the house will have to be rebuilt after its chimney was knocked down to control the rest of the fire inside.

A new heating system for the town hall and a draft solar law are vetted.

WESTERLO — Katherine J. “Kit” Schryver, a teacher’s aid and mother who liked to garden and cook, died peacefully at home with her family by her side on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017. She was 61.

A fire in Westerlo that occurred two days before Christmas has the family living in town without a home, although fire departments were able to save their pets and presents. A community response, including an account to donate to, has sprung up in response.
