The cause of an accessory building fire was not officially determined on Wednesday. Knox Fire Chief Bill Vinson said the building appeared to be used for storage and mechanical work and stood about 50 feet away from the nearest house.

A fund-raiser today in the Schenectady neighborhood where Andrea Fortuin has her yoga studio will raise more than money, said her friend, Renee VanKuren; it will raise her morale.

KNOX — Firefighters watched from afar as Kenneth Fortuin's buildings burned at his Saddlemire Road residence, unable to get to the scene on Wednesday night. Their path to the fire was blocked by cut-down trees and Fortuin, said to be armed, threatened to harm anyone who approached the scene, police said.

Now staying with family, Lisa Kominos suspects a cinder from the chimney set her family's woodpile alight despite the rain and cold. A fund-raiser at The Hofbrau restaurant is being held on Jan. 23.

GUILDERLAND — All three of the independent businesses at 3905 Carman Road — a deli, a dentist’s office, and a dance studio — plan to rebuild after a rooftop fire on Dec. 20 caused extensive damage.

By the time firefighters arrived, Fort Hunter's assistant chief said, the fire was “90-percent involved” and had to be fought in “defensive mode,” meaning attacking it from a safe distance, and trying to prevent it from spreading to other neighborhood buildings.

“The flames were probably 70 to 80 feet in the air,” said one of the first firefighters on the scene, “but, the house sort of sat in a valley, so it took a while for anyone to notice the fire.”
