Due process complaints are a state-sanctioned mechanism that allows parents, guardians, and public agencies to seek changes to the placement of a child with regard to special education classes, as well as identification and evaluation of a disability.

HUNTERSLAND — Carl B. Schanz of High Point Road, who ran the family farm and worked in conservation, died peacefully at home on Friday, July 22, 2022. He was 94.

Colin Anderson, 15, of Charlton, New York, raised a white dorper lamb he purchased from Berne farmer Emily Vincent and sold it at a Saratoga County 4-H auction for $3,048, or around $24 per pound — well over market price and his own expectations.

This year’s exhibit will feature 44 Rensselaerville artists — including around nine children — putting the town’s unusually forceful creative population on full display. 

HILLTOWNS — Ashlyn Anne Hanley, who graduated in June from Berne-Knox-Westerlo, has put the life stories of nine Hilltown elders into a book she hopes kids at her school will read and learn from.

WESTERLO — Starting on Monday, July 25, Sunset Hill Road (County Route 405) will be closed between routes 401 and 32.

The Albany County Department of Public Works is working on a bridge there, starting at 7 a.m. on Monday. That section of Route 405 will be closed until further notice.

A Freedom of Information Law request for the Hilltown not-for-profit’s registration and annual financial documents could not be completed by the New York State Office of the Attorney General because no such forms were ever filed — but they are not required, according to state law.

A host community agreement is essentially financial padding on top of a payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement, both of which are meant to incentivize municipalities to allow renewable energy companies to build projects despite the tax exemption programs put forth by New York State as part of its move away from non-sustainable energy sources.

The Basic Creek has been eroding the bank where it runs through the town park, eating up some of the parkland. Westerlo Supervisor Matthew Kryzak says there’s more that will need to be done, but the grant is a step in the right direction.
