A threat to peaceful rural living and public safety

To the Editor:

I am not against anyone enjoying legally riding ATVs on approved private land. However, in studying this issue in the town of Berne, I read “County sheriff’s office approves of possible ATV trail network in Berne” (Nov. 10, 2022).

I am writing to suggest an opportunity for more investigative reporting on the following points revealed in the Nov. 10 article:

— 1. How did it happen and specifically who in the sheriff’s office gave a thumbs up for the town of Berne to have a private club, Hilltown Riders, administer a trail network on public roads?

— 2. What awareness of legal liability and financial tax burden do board members have should this plan be approved?

— 3. How can Commander Tom Praisner of the sheriff’s office claim he can keep the public safe, promise to increase law-enforcement presence when law enforcement is already stretched thin, and promise our county resources (“I can make that happen”) of personnel and tax dollars to support his personal interest in riding ATVs?

This proposed local law in Berne is a threat to peaceful rural living and public safety and needs to be dropped.
