On the last day of January 2017, the Old Men of the Mountain met at Kim’s West Winds Diner in Preston Hollow.

A chimney fire was put out by the Westerlo Fire Department Wednesday morning. Two residents, including a lifetime member of the department, escaped, but the house will have to be rebuilt after its chimney was knocked down to control the rest of the fire inside.

On Jan. 24, the Old Men of the Mountain met at the Hilltown Café in Rensselaerville. At this meeting, the pickings were slim. The weather was a major factor but some brave souls made the trek.

Starting off on the right foot: Berne-Knox-Westerlo boys’ basketball team played Friday evening at home at full strength for the first time all season — football injuries had earlier sidelined several players. The Bulldogs beat Fort Plain High School decisively — 76 to 52.

For Helderberg Community Energy, the wait has been a decade long to see some Hilltown families with community renewable energy. Monolith Solar opened the area’s first community array, with some Hilltown customers, in Johnsonville last month.

At a Berne-Knox-Westerlo Board of Education workshop meeting, there were several presentations of different visions on how to restructure the school, ranging from new schedules to architectural designs.
